Lionel Messi Fined After Hitting Quinn Sullivan During Inter Miami vs. Philadelphia Union Fight
Lionel Messi avoided a suspension, but he was reportedly fined an undisclosed amount after he slapped Philadelphia Union forward Quinn Sullivan in the back of the head during Wednesday's 2-2 draw.
The Associated Press reported Messi and Inter Miami defender Ian Fray were each fined an undisclosed amount of money for different incidents in the contest.
Fray was fined for grabbing Sullivan's neck when they got tangled in the penalty area. Sullivan responded by tackling Fray.
Those weren't the only incidents in the heated game, as Cavan Sullivan and Yannick Bright each received red cards at the end of the contest for their scuffle:
However, insider Glenn Crooks reported Sullivan's red card was rescinded upon further review, which means he will be allowed to play in Saturday's contest against Austin.
Messi was a major storyline during the game for more than his back-and-forth with Sullivan. He buried a goal in the 26th minute, which gave Inter Miami a 2-1 advantage. Yet Philadelphia battled back to earn the draw and the point that came with it thanks to a second-half goal from Neil Pierre.
It was the second game between Miami and Philadelphia this season, and both featured dramatics.
While Wednesday's was defined more by the scuffles and fights outside the actual soccer, their matchup in May was more about the on-field fireworks. The two sides combined for 10 goals, eight of which came in the first half, on the way to Miami's 6-4 victory.
They will not face each other again this season unless they match up in the playoffs.
That would require a dramatic turnaround for Philadelphia, which is in 13th place in the Eastern Conference with 20 points. Inter Miami is well on its way to the playoffs in second place with 39 points.
