LeBron James 2026 NBA Free Agency Live Updates, Tracking Latest Rumors for NBA Star

SiriusXM's Eddie Johnson posits an interesting theory above, but in today's NBA and media landscape, it's a tough one to fully buy.

There are so many sources and well-sourced reporters out there. Keeping this tight a lid on a decision of this magnitude for more than a few hours would be a monumental task.

Of course, it's not impossible. If only the most important people in the process were clued in, you might be able to get away with this. But it feels like LeBron truly hasn't made his call yet.

Reporting has been all over the map throughout this LeBron free agency. Writers and their sources can run wild when you give them almost a month to speculate or hunt for speculation.

At various times in the last few weeks, we've heard LeBron made up his mind and then changed it, was frustrated with Adam Silver being frustrated with him, was waiting for some team to land Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving and was not waiting for any other dominos to fall.

At this point, it's next to impossible to know exactly what's going on. But that hasn't kept some of our best reporters from trying.

The latest comes from ESPN's Vincent Goodwill, who revisited the "LeBron wants a reunion" genre.

On that front, he wrote, "League sources said James had been angling for former teammate Irving to join him in Cleveland, but the Dallas Mavericks have had no interest in engaging the Cavaliers in a trade, and Irving is believed to be comfortable where he is."

So, this doesn't really clue us into the final result, but it is further evidence that LeBron could indeed be playing general manager, something he's done plenty of times over the course of his career.

Beyond the obvious, "because it's LeBron James," there are plenty of reasons his free agency is generating the kind of attention it is.

Chief among them may be the fact that LeBron is still a top 30-40 player (or at least he was last season). And if he really is willing to play on a veteran minimum deal or on some portion of the mid-level exception, he'd be one of the best values in the NBA.

In 2025-26, when Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves were both off the floor, LeBron averaged 28.3 points and 10.4 assists per 75 possessions, with a near-average true shooting percentage. And the Lakers had a plus-7.9 net rating in those minutes.

In other words, even if his overall production may have dipped a bit on a team with two ball-dominant guards, LeBron is still capable of carrying teams to winning basketball.

And on any of the teams that are still in the mix, though he may be limited by other stars similarly to how he was in Los Angeles, James could have a massive impact.
