New LeBron James Rumors Reveal Teams That Have 'Made Moves Specifically Tied' to NBA Star

Andrew PetersJul 23, 2026

Many teams have spent the majority of July trying to lure LeBron James to their city as the star free agent searches for a new home.

Among James' top suitors, only a few have "made moves specifically tied" to James. The Athletic's Joe Vardon noted Thursday that the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers are the two squads that acted with the intention of enticing James.

Draymond Green opted out of his contract, a move that "was indeed to give the team flexibility to sign James and trade for Anthony Davis." James Harden likewise has remained unsigned, giving Cleveland the flexibility to sign James.

Vardon also noted an under-the-radar move the Cavs made that could be tied to James. The team paused the "Cavs United" memberships program, which means those who have not already purchased season tickets won't be able to do so for the time being.

Vardon added that a poster alleging to be from Cleveland's tickets team on a sub-Reddit said that "free agency this time of year" was the reason behind the pause. The thought process behind that move could be that, if James signs with the Cavs, season ticket prices could go up.

The Warriors asking Green to opt out of his contract might have been a moot point this offseason. While the original plan was to try to pair James and Davis up in Cleveland, the Wizards reportedly have no interest in trading their star big man.

Still, Green opting out could give Golden State a bit more flexibility to bring in James.

The other teams reported to be in the mix for James, the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers, have both had big offseasons, though their moves weren't exactly to try to lure James.

The Heat, of course, traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but that happened before James had even informed the Los Angeles Lakers he wouldn't be returning. The Sixers landed Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics, but that trade also would have taken place regardless of James' status.

James reportedly has all the information he needs to make a decision, but whether that will stop teams from trying to strengthen their case remains to be seen.
