Jacksonville Jaguars Training Camp: Week 2 Stock Report
The second week of practices hasn't completely ended, but it's time to check on the Jacksonville Jaguars at an individual level. Each player has continued hard offseason work, and it's time to see if some of their stocks have risen or fallen in the past week.
For some, it's a culmination of an entire offseason. Others may have struggled so far, but a good week can turn a player's training camp around. A boost of confidence and a solid play can take a struggling player to a certain roster spot or more.
In the past week, the Jaguars have seen typical practices as well as a scrimmage. While many players have either improved, stumbled or stayed in the middle, the top five most notable changes will feature.
A training camp is not without its ups and downs, but the Jaguars seem positive overall in their progress. The season is slowly starting to rear its head, and Jacksonville looks in good shape to meet it come September.
Arrelious Benn's Stock Is on the Rise Thanks to Training Camp Performance
1 of 5
Arrelious Benn has seen time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles and now the Jaguars. Injury issues have plagued him for most of his career, and they haven't allowed the Bucs' second-round selection in the 2010 draft reach his potential.
However, he's doing his best to put the past behind him and to take on his new chance with the Jaguars. He's been solid most of the offseason, but it seems he's really turned it on now that training camp has started.
According to Jaguars.com's John Oehser, who references the recently released depth chart, Benn has earned himself a spot higher than promising rookie Rashad Greene, and he's been satisfied to hit his stride this offseason.
"Injuries have set my career back, but that’s just adversity. ... It’s all about how you bounce back from it. I’m actually thankful for it, for having the adversities, because they’ve helped out in my life, on and off the field," he said.
It's obvious that he's happy in Jacksonville, and that could be a reason he's shone in practice as of late. Benn has had a great start to the preseason, and he'll look to keep raising his stock as it goes on.
Davon House Securing Starting Spot Means His Stock Is Up
2 of 5
Davon House has to be feeling good. Having been listed as a starter on the latest depth chart this past Monday, he reportedly backed it up with a top-notch performance on Tuesday, per the Florida Times-Union's Ryan O'Halloran.
House squared up against the aforementioned Benn, wide receiver Greg Jenkins and starting WR Allen Hurns, and he beat them all. Jenkins may not be the biggest name, but wins over an improving Benn and an exciting Hurns are something to be proud of.
House was signed in free agency this past year, trading the Green Bay Packers for Jacksonville. It may be a drop in history and overall squad quality, but House has quickly settled in and made a name for himself in training camp.
It helps that one of House's biggest competitors, cornerback Dwayne Gratz, is currently missing reps because of a calf injury, per O'Halloran. House already seemed to be the front-runner for the position, but a big day while Gratz was on the sideline just widens the gap.
This Friday, the Jaguars will get to see House and a lot of their new offseason additions against the Pittsburgh Steelers. House could be going up against the explosive Antonio Brown, and it should be a solid test to see exactly how well he's performing.
Josh Scobee's Stock Not as Stable with New Positional Battle
3 of 5
Josh Scobee is, for all intents and purposes, a Jaguars legend. However, almost all legends eventually decline and/or lose their starting job. Scobee isn't out of a job yet, but rookie kicker Jason Myers is making quite the case for himself.
According to Jaguars.com's John Oehser, Myers and Scobee have been slowly developing a battle for the starting kicker spot. It's Scobee's spot to lose, but Myers is coming on strong with kicks like his dazzling 60-yard field goal on Monday, per ESPN's Michael DiRocco.
Scobee still has quite the leg, especially for his age (33). But Myers' has one as well, and that's not to mention his youth. Age doesn't matter that much when it comes to kickers, but the 24-year-old Myers is impressing all the same.
Scobee hasn't done anything wrong in this case, but his stock is dropping because of the way Myers stepped onto the scene. Scobee will have to retaliate with his own impressive performances.
However, as Oehser noted, Myers did miss a few kicks as well on Monday, so it's not like Myers is without flaws. The upcoming preseason games should make for the perfect battleground for the Jaguars' latest positional battle.
Stefen Wisniewski's Solid Performances Earn Praise, Stock Raise
4 of 5
Center Stefen Wisniewski joined the Jaguars in this season's free agency, and he's quickly given 2014 starter Luke Bowanko a tough battle. It's been neck-and-neck as of late, but recent comments from head coach Gus Bradley indicate "Wiz's" stock is rising.
According Jaguars.com's John Oehser, Bradley praised Wiz, saying, "He is on it. That guy has seen a lot of ball. The tricks of the trade, managing the offensive line up front...all of those things are good. The physical nature is something he wanted to improve on (in the scrimmage) and it really showed up on tape.”
Personally, Wisniewski has been the starter of choice since his arrival. Bowanko surprised a lot of people with a great rookie season, but Wiz simply offers too much for Jacksonville not to make him the starting center.
As Bradley mentioned, Wisniewski's experience is such a big plus to the point where it could be the determining factor. Bradley also mentioned that he's improved his physicality, making him an even more attractive option.
This is all without mentioning Wiz's familiarity with new offensive coordinator Greg Olson. Wisniewski hasn't won the job yet, but he's delivering in training camp to match his outside benefits. And that deserves recognition.
A.J. Cann's Stock Rises After Recent Praise, Possible Training Camp Promotion
5 of 5
Having talked about rookie A.J. Cann recently, this slide probably won't introduce anything new to most of the readers. However, Cann has earned praise early this week, and his stock is continuing to grow or at least appear to be at a consistent level.
According to Jaguars.com's John Oesher, Bradley recently complimented Cann on his work as of late, and that could mean a promotion to reps with the first team. That's a big step up for a rookie, but Cann should be ready for it.
A four-year starter at USC, Cann isn't short on valuable experience. While Beadles has started for the Jaguars in 2014 and with the Denver Broncos before that, the drop in experience from Beadles to Cann is not nearly as bad as it could be.
If Cann got promoted to the first team within the week or next week, the battle for left guard would reach a new level. Beadles didn't exactly impress last season, and even improvement in practices can't erase all the mistakes he made last year.
Like the battle at kicker and center, this battle should be decided through the preseason games. It's Cann's last hope to earn a starting spot, and he'll be coming full force once he gets his reps this Friday and in the future.
