Garrett Hartley to Steelers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Tim DanielsAug 11, 2015

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed kicker Garrett Hartley on Tuesday to replace injured starter Shaun Suisham, who's expected to miss the entire 2015 season.

NFL agent Erik Burkhardt confirmed the agreement, as Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network previously reported Hartley was one of three kickers, along with Jay Feely and Alex Henery, the Steelers worked out to fill the vacant position.

Steelers Depot reported the deal is for one year at the veteran minimum. The team confirmed the deal as well.

Pro Football Talk provided more information about the tryout battle:

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted Suisham suffered a torn ACL and damaged cartilage on the second-half kickoff in the Hall of Fame Game on Sunday. His foot got caught in the turf as he attempted to run downfield to make the tackle.

Hartley spent the first six seasons of his career with the New Orleans Saints after going undrafted in 2008. He made a cameo appearance for the Cleveland Browns during the latter stages of last season to replace Billy Cundiff, making all three field goals over the final two games.

For his career, the 29-year-old veteran is 85 of 104 (81.7 percent) on field goals and has only missed one extra point in 179 attempts. Most impressively, he's 6-for-8 from beyond 50 yards in his career.

The biggest test for Hartley will be kicking in Pittsburgh. Between the notoriously difficult field conditions and the weather issues as winter approaches, it's the polar opposite of kicking inside a dome during his time in New Orleans.

If he can acclimate to those surroundings—he's made just two field goals from beyond 39 yards in games where the temperature was below 40, per Warren Sharp of Sharp Football—his track record suggests he'll be a solid option for Pittsburgh.
