Tournament Preview
3 of 3
The U.S. Open is typically one of the most anticipated tournaments on the golfing calendar. The event often features a handful of surprisesโSpaun's 2025 win was also his first top-20 finish in a majorโas well as some emerging stars.
This year's field will be no different, as several amateurs, Korn Ferry tour pros, and other non-PGA champions. A complete breakdown of the full field can be found at GolfChannel.com.
While we may well see an unexpected competitor win the tournament, all eyes are on the favorites heading into the weekend. Scheffler is understandable a heavy favorite, even though he hasn't been as dominant this year as in past years.
Scheffler hasn't won since taking The American Express in January, but he's recorded six straight top-20 finishes and remains No. 1 in the world golf rankings.
A victory this weekend would complete Scheffler's career grand slam. Getting it at Shinnecock Hills could be difficult, as Scheffler isn't particularly familiar with the course.
In fact, Scheffler had never set foot on the course before visiting earlier this month.
"That was my first time on property," Scheffler said, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach. "It was kind of what I expected. I had heard some rumors about how difficult the greens were. I was a little surprised at the width of the fairways, but the green complexes there are extremely difficult, and I think that's where the greatest challenge comes from."
Shinnecock figures to be a tough challenge for all of the golfers this weekend. The U.S. Open has been a trying tournament, regardless of venue, in recent years, as evidenced by Spaun's win with a score of -1. That is likely to continue at Shinnecock's fast links-style course, where conditions can change significantly over multiple days.
"Shinnecock is just different," USGA chief championships officer John Bodenhamer said, per Mike Stachura of Golf Digest. "You've got Peconic Bay on one side, the Atlantic on the other, sandy soils, perched greensโand when you combine that with sun and wind, conditions can change incredibly quickly."
Fans shouldn't expect low scores to dominate the weekend. Consistent, mistake-free golf will likely be the key to victory, and that's perfectly suited for Scheffler. Regardless of who wins, though, fans should expect four days of quality, intense competition with a beautiful backdrop on Long Island.
