Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano Fixed-Fight Conspiracy Theory Addresses by MVP Co-Founder in New Video
Ronda Rousey's speedy 17-second victory over Gina Carano on Saturday night drew criticisms from across the world of MMA, with some even theorizing that the fight was fixed.
During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Most Valuable Promotions co-founder Nakisa Bidarian dismissed the notion that Rousey and Carano's historic main event on Netflix's first-ever MMA showcase was rigged.
"The fact that people are speaking about, 'Oh, that must've been fixed. How did that happen?' One, you definitely don't know the history of Ronda Rousey," Bidarian said. "Two, if you're gonna fix something, you certainly wouldn't do it to last 17 seconds. And three, it just speaks to the beauty of the sport and the unexpected."
Bidarian pointed to Rousey's history of quick finishes, as she had three previous wins in her legendary career that lasted less than 35 seconds.
Still, fans and media members alike chose to overlook that history while critiquing Saturday's event. Even Mark Shapiro, who is president of the TKO Group that runs WWE and the UFC, reduced the fight to "more of a stunt than a meaningful MMA event" and asserted that it was something "I don't think is good for the sport long-term."
Bidarian fired back and made it clear that Rousey's win on Saturday was the same thing that helped the UFC rise to prominence in the first place.
"It just speaks to a lack of understanding of the sport," Bidarian said of the claims made by Shapiro and other pundits. "... The entire UFC-Ronda Rousey train was built on quick finishes. She was the biggest pay-per-view star in the sport based on quick finishes."
