Best and Worst Booking Decisions of WWE Survivor Series WarGames Results
Another edition of Survivor Series is done, and that means we also have two more WarGames teams that claimed victory.
For the past few years, WWE has pushed the traditional elimination matches that defined this event to the background in favor of the two-ring WarGames cage match.
Only two titles were on the line Saturday night. Stephanie Vaquer defended the Women's World Championship against Nikki Bella, and John Cena put the Intercontinental Championship on the line against Dominik Mysterio.
Let's take a look at everything that happened at Survivor Series and discuss the best and worst booking decisions from the show.
Best: Dominik Mysterio is John Cena's Final PLE Opponent
1 of 6WWE hasn't built many new stars in the past couple of years, but someone who has seen a big push is Dominik Mysterio.
Not only has WWE booked him to win the North American, Intercontinental, tag team, and AAA Mega titles, but he has also been given a prime spot at the tail end of John Cena's retirement tour.
One thing Cena has said about his farewell is he wants to set up the next generation for success, and while Dirty Dom might not be everyone's favorite young star, there is no denying how much effort WWE has put into building him up.
The young Mysterio could be a major player in WWE for a long time. He might not be at the stage to win a world title yet, but if he continues on the path he has been on, he will get there soon.
Best: Choosing a Baseball Stadium
2 of 6
During the pre-show, panelist Peter Rosenberg noted that baseball stadiums are among the least used venue types for WWE.
Petco Park in San Diego offered a unique-looking location for Survivor Series. Not only is it an open-air stadium, but the architecture also looks totally different from the usual arenas we see every week.
Triple H pointed out how the setup does present some challenges, but it was nothing WWE couldn't overcome.
Worst: No Shark Cages
3 of 6
One of the staples of WWE's WarGames has been the remaining competitors standing in a shark cage on the stage waiting for their moment to enter the ring.
This time, WWE opted to skip that part and have people sit backstage until it was time to fight.
The cages added a fun element to the match, as people sometimes taunted opponents who were still locked up.
It's a small change, but it was immediately noticeable. The stage and entrance setup were likely a factor in this decision, but let's hope the shark cages return next year.
Best: Letting Iyo Sky do Iyo Sky Stuff
4 of 6
Iyo Sky has appeared in more WarGames matches than any other woman in WWE, thanks to competing in them both in NXT and on the main roster.
Nobody in the current generation of WWE Superstars has made this stipulation their own the way she has, especially when it comes to her signature trash-can spot.
Sky is one of the most reliable in-ring performers in all of WWE. She can have a great match with anyone, but when you give her something big, she is going to jump off it and create a highlight-reel moment.
WWE even went to the trouble of making her a special trash can with her name on it that she used to take out four members of the opposing team at once.
Worst: AJ Lee's Team Wins
5 of 6Before anyone reads too much into this, we will say right off the bat that the babyface team winning is not an outright bad thing, but it's the much less interesting outcome of the two possible endings.
For one thing, AJ Lee has already gotten the better of Becky Lynch on multiple occasions, so having her get another win by making The Man tap out here does nothing to advance their feud.
This will eventually lead to a big singles match either way, but that showdown would be much more interesting if both went into it with one win each.
This was one of those matches with no wrong result, because the action between the bells made it special. It just would have created more interesting storyline developments had it gone the other way.
Best: Brock Lesnar Takes a Beating and Bron Breakker Wins
6 of 6The men's WarGames match closed the show, and it was easy to see why. A star-studded affair featuring the two top men's champions and a handful of former world champions.
Several different rivalries existed in this match, including a couple among people on the same side of the fight, so there was no shortage of animosity in the ring.
Somehow, Brock Lesnar managed to dish out a lot of damage while also taking just as much from everyone on the opposing team. He took Spears, a GTS, a Cross Rhodes and several more big moves.
Seeing The Beast Incarnate look more vulnerable makes him more interesting than he ever was when WWE was booking him as an unstoppable force.
Instead of having Lesnar or even Drew McIntyre get the win for the heel team, WWE booked Bron Breakker to pin CM Punk with a huge Spear following interference by a masked man who hit Punk with a Stomp. This will definitely set up The Badass for bigger things down the road.
WWE planted seeds to make us think it was Seth Rollins, but Wade Barrett reminded us that The Visionary had just had shoulder surgery, so it will likely turn out to be a swerve.
The best thing about the end of this match was creating a mystery. Was it Rollins? Why would he help the same men who turned on him? Who else could it be if not him?
We'll have to tune in on Monday to see if we get any answers.
