Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
On the heels of beating Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental Championship on Monday night's episode of Raw, John Cena is reportedly planned for a significant bout later this month at Survivor Series.
According to Ibou of Self Made and Cory Hays of BodySlam.net, Cena is slated to be part of the men's WarGames match at Survivor Series in San Diego.
In addition to Cena winning the IC title for the first time in his career on Monday, Raw was highlighted by the announcement of two WarGames matches for Survivor Series.
On the men's side, Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed of The Vision, along with Logan Paul, attempted to attack world heavyweight champion CM Punk on Raw.
Jey Uso arrived to fight alongside Punk, and WWE champion Cody Rhodes then evened the odds by helping Punk and Uso run off The Vision.
In a backstage segment, Raw general manager Adam Pearce made the WarGames match official with help from William Regal.
For now, the match will pit Punk, Uso and Rhodes against Breakker, Reed and Paul, but WarGames typically features five wrestlers per team, so there is room for some additions.
It has long been assumed that Roman Reigns would be part of the babyface squad due to his issues with The Vision, and if Cena is added as well, it would make for one of the most star-studded WarGames teams of all time.
On the heel side, Brock Lesnar makes sense as an addition because of his tie to Paul Heyman and The Vision. It isn't clear who might be added beyond him, but Drew McIntyre feels like a strong possibility because of his rivalry with Rhodes.
If Cena is in WarGames, then he won't defend the IC title at Survivor Series, but perhaps a defense is in the cards for next week's Raw at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
According to Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Live (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), it is believed Cena will wrestle a match next week in what is scheduled to be his final Raw appearance as an active wrestler.
Cena has only three advertised appearances remaining in his in-ring career, and a match at MSG and participation in WarGames seem like strong inclusions to the latter stages of his retirement tour.
Cena Reportedly Pitched NXT Showcase at SNME
At the Dec. 13 Saturday Night's Main Event in Washington, D.C., Cena will face the winner of the Last Time Is Now tournament in the final match of his career, but he also made another significant announcement regarding that show during Monday's Raw.
While addressing the live crowd in Boston, which is close to his hometown of West Newbury, Massachusetts, Cena revealed an aspect of Saturday Night's Main Event that has him particularly excited.
Cena said he was asked what he wants to get out of his retirement celebration, and one thing in particular that he said he wanted was to build toward the future.
With that in mind, Cena announced that the other matches on the SNME card will be exhibitions pitting top main roster stars against the best NXT has to offer.
According to Alvarez (h/t WrestlePurists), that is an idea Cena legitimately came up with rather than it being part of a storyline.
Per Alvarez, Cena "loved his time at the WWE Performance Center" so much that he made the call for NXT wrestlers to be featured on the undercard of his retirement match.
Much like NXT wrestlers will get an opportunity at SNME, the Last Time Is Now is giving wrestlers across multiple brands an opportunity as well.
NXT is among those brands, and it was revealed on Monday's Raw that Je'Von Evans is the first NXT Superstar who will be in the tournament, facing a returning Gunther in the first round.
Given Cena's desire for NXT wrestlers to have the spotlight at Saturday Night's Main Event, it is fair to wonder if he may also be pushing for an NXT wrestler to win the tourney and the chance to be his final opponent.
Conflicting Reports on Reason for McIntyre's On-Screen Suspension
During the main event of last week's episode of SmackDown between Cody Rhodes and Aleister Black, Drew McIntyre made his presence felt by hitting the referee with a Claymore Kick.
Furious over McIntyre's actions, SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis then announced that the Scottish Warrior would be suspended.
Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News) reported that the suspension angle was done so McIntyre could take time off to film a movie, however, PWInsider.com (h/t Carrier) followed up by reporting that it is simply part of McIntyre's storyline and has nothing to do with needing time off.
McIntyre has been embroiled in a heated rivalry with Rhodes lately, leading to WWE Championship matches between them at Wrestlepalooza and the most recent edition of Saturday Night's Main Event.
At SNME, McIntyre tried to introduce the WWE title belt into the match when the referee was incapacitated, but Cody was able to get it away from him.
Rhodes then hit McIntyre with a DDT onto the belt, leading to a successful title defense.
McIntyre blamed Rhodes and the referee for screwing him over at SNME, which explains why he was out for revenge at SmackDown.
If McIntyre truly doesn't need time off and is available in the coming weeks, perhaps having him return from suspension to join the heel team against Rhodes and the babyface team in WarGames at Survivor Series is an option.
