K.J. McDaniels Re-Signs with Rockets: Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
Even though he played sparingly in just 10 games for the team this past season, restricted free agent swingman K.J. McDaniels re-signed with the Houston Rockets on Sunday. According to Fox 26's Mark Berman, McDaniels' deal is worth $10 million over three years with no option.
He expressed his excitement regarding the deal via his Twitter account:
McDaniels shot 33 percent while averaging 3.3 minutes per contest for Houston after being traded to the Rockets from the Philadelphia 76ers. He did start 15 of 52 games for Philly in 2014-15, putting up 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks.
"I feel loyalty to the team," said McDaniels on Sunday, per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. "I have a great relationship with the players. I love the city and the history of the Rockets."
Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders weighed in on McDaniels' deal:
McDaniels was the 32nd overall pick in the 2014 draft out of Clemson and showed some promise in an unsavory situation the Sixers. Finding a spot in Houston's rotation may be difficult for the 22-year-old, though.
The Rockets are loaded on the wing with the likes of MVP runner-up James Harden, past NBA champion Trevor Ariza and an exceptional role player in Corey Brewer. They may get some contribution from rookie first-round pick Sam Dekker as well.
One way McDaniels can find his way onto the floor is through his defense. He's able to guard well at the 2 or 3 spot and has the athleticism to fit into coach Kevin McHale's uptempo style of basketball.
But with a suspect outside shot still in development, McDaniels will have to work hard on that area of his game to be better offensively. It seems the Rockets are betting on that to happen, which would be ideal considering Houston set an NBA record in April for most three-pointers made in a single season.
