Benfica vs. PSG: Score, Grades and Reaction from 2015 ICC

Joseph ZuckerJul 18, 2015

Paris Saint-Germain got their 2015 International Champions Cup run off on the right foot, beating Benfica 3-2 on Saturday night at BMO Field in Toronto.

Jean-Kevin Augustin, Lucas Digne and Lucas Moura were the PSG goalscorers, while Anderson Talisca and Jonas got Benfica on the board.

The victory will be particularly encouraging for the Ligue 1 champions given how many young players they had on the pitch Saturday. Many of the club's heavy hitters were missing, which allowed a few different squad members the opportunity to shine.

Philly.com's Jonathan Tannenwald provided the full roster on location in Toronto, highlighting some of the more notable absences:

Since this was only PSG's second match of the pre-season, manager Laurent Blanc is still focusing more on player fitness rather than determining his lineup/tactics for the start of the Ligue 1 season. During the pre-match press conference on Friday, Blanc said he'd lean more on his younger players against Benfica, per Paris Saint-Germain's official site:

"

We are still some way off seeing the Paris team, or squad, that will play this season, that's clear. Our South Americans will be arriving this week and the finalists of the Copa America (Lavezzi and Pastore) will arrive shortly after that. Our European internationals have only just joined us, so obviously they are not ready. Playing them too soon means a risk of injury and we won't be taking any risks.

It will be a very young team against Benfica on Saturday, like it was for the match against Wiener Sportklub in Austria. Benfica are a very good team.

"

One of the bigger storylines surrounding the PSG squad is whom Blanc will select as his first-team goalkeeper. Salvatore Sirigu is the incumbent starter, but Kevin Trapp's arrival could signal the 28-year-old Italian's exit.

Trapp did little to dispel that notion after he made a tremendous save on Talisca in the 16th minute. The 21-year-old looked to have a wide-open goal from just a few yards out, but Trapp somehow recovered and got back into position to knock the ball out of danger, as noted by Tannenwald:

The save became all the more important after Augustin put PSG ahead in the 29th minute. The young forward executed a perfect turn to his left to shed a Benfica defender before delivering his right-footed shot into the bottom left corner.

Talisca gained a measure of revenge on Trapp in the 34th minute after he tied the game on a nice left-footed volley from outside the box. The PSG keeper saved a shot from Jonas, but the ball bounced right to Talisca, who had plenty of time and space to properly measure his attempt.

The ball appeared to clip Serge Aurier's head because Trapp was caught wrong-footed and helpless to save the shot.

You could absolve Trapp of some blame on Benfica's first goal, but he had nowhere to hide when the Portuguese champions took the lead in the 42nd minute.

Nicolas Gaitan did a great job of drawing Trapp out of his goal with an attacking run into the 18-yard box. From there, he waited patiently until he found Jonas, who had a tap-in to make it 2-1. Even PSG's English Twitter account acknowledged Gaitan's brilliant play:

The International Champions Cup provided a brief look at the sequence from behind the PSG goal:

Benfica deservedly led at the half, taking advantage of the talent gap between themselves and the rather inexperienced Paris Saint-Germain.

That advantage evaporated in the second half after Rui Vitoria made a few substitutions around the 66th minute. That seemed to throw off the strong rhythm this club exhibited in the first half.

Of course, the fact that Lucas tied the game at 2-2 from the penalty spot in the 64th minute didn't help matters, either. Jardel was guilty of a foul on Christopher Nkunku, which necessitated the penalty kick.

Lucas sent Julio Cesar the wrong way with a well-placed kick into the bottom right corner.

Cesar was one of the players included in Vitoria's mass substitutions a few minutes later, and the decision to bring him off might have cost Benfica the match.

In the 79th minute, Augustin slid a pass across to the left to Digne. The PSG left-back fired a shot right at replacement goalkeeper Paulo Lopes, who conceded the goal at his near post. Lopes looked almost surprised by the shot as he deflected the ball into his own net.

Digne will take the goal nonetheless. French football journalist Jonathan Johnson noted the 21-year-old has gotten his summer off to a strong start so far:

The Benfica Podcast didn't want to take too much credit from Digne, either:

Paris Saint-Germain won't have to wait long until they take the pitch again. Their next match of the International Champions Cup is against Fiorentina on Tuesday in Harrison, New Jersey. It wouldn't be a surprise if Blanc starts integrating more senior players into his starting 11.

Benfica will also get Fiorentina the next time they take part in the tournament. The two teams will meet Friday in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Grades

Lucas Digne: B+

While you can certainly blame Lopes for making a mess of Digne's shot, don't dock points from the Frenchman's performance. The goal occurred because of Digne's quickness and attacking verve. He's rarely shied away from moving forward from his defensive position, and that trait paid off Saturday.

Digne has showed a lot of promise over the past few years, but this could be the season where he truly emerges in a big way.

Jean-Kevin Augustin: A

Augustin was the best attacking player on the pitch for Paris Saint-Germain. He scored their opener with that great piece of skill to turn the Benfica defender. He also set up Digne's goal by first sucking in Ola John to open up the space and then delivering a nice pass.

At 18 years old, Augustin likely doesn't have a major role to play for PSG in the upcoming season. It will be interesting to see how the rest of his pre-season unfolds and whether the club loans him out in order for him to get a little first-team experience.

Anderson Talisca: B

Talisca really should've scored with his first chance of the game. Maybe he waited a bit too long before he struck the ball, but if he places his shot anywhere but down the center of the goal, Benfica take a 1-0 lead. The 21-year-old did redeem himself a bit with his first-half goal.

You wonder if Talisca might have been able to register a second goal later on in the second half had Vitoria not removed him in the 67th minute.
