Club America vs. Manchester United: Score, Grades and Reaction from 2015 ICC
Manchester United walked away with a 1-0 win over Club America in their first match of the 2015 International Champions Cup on Friday night at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
Morgan Schneiderlin was the lone goalscorer, giving the Red Devils an early advantage they didn't relinquish.
With this being Manchester United's first match of the preseason, three of the Red Devils' biggest summer signings had the chance to make their official debuts for the club. Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian were all included in Louis van Gaal's starting 11.
A player's preseason performance can always be a bit deceiving, but Van Gaal will have undoubtedly expected those three stars to make a strong account on Friday. The Dutchman made it known he's not about to hand over first-team places on reputation alone, per Sky Sports:
"Every player who is sitting here can make that contribution but they know already they have to fight for their position. Never in top sport is it secure. No position is secure. Even my position is not secure, as you know. Morgan Schneiderlin has to fight with Michael Carrick, Schweinsteiger and Daley Blind. These are the players who can play in the centre of midfield. Matteo Darmian has to fight with (Antonio) Valencia.
"
Schneiderlin certainly made a great impression on Van Gaal early on as he put United ahead 1-0 in the fifth minute. He got on the end of a cross from Juan Mata and floated a header over America goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez and into the far post.
Rob Dawson of the Manchester Evening News added that the French midfielder remained a productive presence on the pitch following his goal:
Rafael Hernandez of Grup 14 also offered praise for Schneiderlin and how he helps tie Van Gaal's side together:
Schneiderlin's performance was certainly among the top highlights in an otherwise uneventful first half. Wayne Rooney had a left-footed shot curl just wide of the bottom right post in the 39th minute, which was United's best chance to make it 2-0 before half-time.
The Red Devils simply looked rusty. They were going through the motions as their players get back to match fitness.
The America players also seemed hesitant to throw themselves fully into the game and risk injury with a week to go until the start of the 2015 Apertura.
Van Gaal also proceeded to replace his entire lineup to start the second half, which robbed United of any fluidity they built in the first 45 minutes. The mass substitutions did, however, result in Bastian Schweinsteiger donning a United shirt for the first time, a fact which excited Bleacher Report UK:
Fox Sports' Stuart Holden envisions Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick forming a strong partnership in the middle of the pitch:
In addition to the former Bayern Munich star, many United supporters were also likely pleasantly surprised by Andreas Pereira. The 19-year-old was patient and composed on the ball and helped set his team-mates up in attacking positions.
Jonas Giaever is a fan of Pereira's more direct style when in possession:
The Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst wondered if Pereira feels a little more assured on the pitch with the knowledge his future isn't up in the air:
"Seldom impressed by Pereira in U21s last season but he seems to be more relaxed now contract is sorted. Had a good half so far. #mufc

Another of United's talented young stars, Adnan Januzaj had a great opportunity to double the club's lead in the 76th minute, but his close-range effort was saved by Gonzalez.
Andres Andrade provided America's only shot on target of the game in the 81st minute. Anders Lindegaard was up to the challenge and made the save. Andrade also had a free-kick sail high of the goal in the 84th minute.
United managed to see out the win in the final 16-plus minutes, which is an encouraging start to their pre-season. The Red Devils were nowhere near their peak, but they have a lot of moving parts to integrate into the team. All things considered, Friday's game could've gone much worse.
Manchester United will continue their North American tour Tuesday against the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium. In a little over a week, they'll feature against Barcelona in Santa Clara, California, in one of the more heavily anticipated ICC clashes this summer.
America, meanwhile, will begin Mexican league action as they take on Puebla on July 26. Just two days later, they'll welcome Benfica to Mexico City in their next match of the International Champions Cup.
