Richardson set the previous 100-meter record of 10.65 seconds at the world championships in Aug. 2023. She also competed in Sunday's race, finishing at No. 5.
Despite failing to secure a podium finish, Richardson's time of 10.94 seconds still represented a season-best mark.
Tina Clayton earned silver in the 100-meter final by finishing in 10.76 seconds, with reigning Olympic champion Julien Alfred rounding out the top three with her time of 10.84 seconds.
Three-time Olympic gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finished at No. 6 in the event, marking her final time competing in the world championships.
As for Jefferson-Wooden, she was in awe of her new record that also represented the fourth-fastest women's 100-meter time ever.
"Obviously, having the championship record, even though it was 'Carri's, it's mine now," Jefferson-Wooden said, via ESPN. "It's kind of crazy to say that."
The 24-year-old is in the midst of a stellar year, as she already entered Sunday's action unbeaten in the 100-meter in 2025. Jefferson-Wooden also won bronze in the event at the Paris Olympics and was part of the United States team that won gold in the 4x100-meter relay during the Games.
Now, she'll attempt to become the first woman to win both the 100-meter final and 200-meter final at the world championships since Fraser-Pryce did so in 2013.
The 200-meter final will take place on Friday.
