John Cena Talks Potential Opponent for WWE Retirement Match, More With Jimmy Fallon

Mike ChiariAug 14, 2025

John Cena declined to choose a preferred opponent for his upcoming final WWE match during an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday.

When asked by Fallon if he has an opponent in mind for the last match of his illustrious career in December (beginning at the 5:15 mark of the video), Cena suggested that he is happy to go in whatever direction WWE desires.

"No, no, I've never operated like that," Cena said. "It's weird because I've always just been that guy. ... I've just always kind of been reliable and showing up and doing whatever I'm asked. And I really want this tour to be not only special—it'll always be special to me because you guys are out there—I want it to be special for the business. My goal has always been to leave WWE better than I found it, so whoever they deem appropriate to get that energy, man, I'm cool with that."

Cena, who was decked out in his Peacemaker outfit on the Tonight Show in anticipation of Season 2 of the Peacemaker series dropping next week on HBO Max, also discussed how his body feels as his in-ring career winds down.

In response to Fallon asking Cena if he wishes he had "more time" left in his wrestling career, Cena responded affirmatively, but also acknowledged that the time is right for him to step away.

"Oh course, every part of me," Cena said. "Yeah, absolutely. My body is screaming at me to close the chapter. ... I'm 48 man, I'll be 49 next year. I'm very grateful to say that WWE has given me almost 25 years to go out and do my thing and be invisible, and it's been fantastic. But I also remember when I was a young kid back in 2002 thinking I'd never get a chance. And then when I did, I came up with a young, hungry class. And I think if I hang around any longer than now, I'm just taking time away from those young guys who could be the next chance to make an impact on something. It's time, man. It's time."

Cena announced last year that 2025 would be the final year of his in-ring career, and he is now down to 11 more appearances as an active competitor.

His retirement tour has been a whirlwind, as Cena shockingly turned heel back at Elimination Chamber and went on to beat Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41, making him a record-breaking, 17-time world champ.

Cena then found redemption prior to SummerSlam earlier this month by returning to his babyface roots. Rhodes won the WWE title back from Cena at SummerSlam, and then Brock Lesnar made a surprise return to WWE by hitting Cena with an F-5 to close the show.

A match or two between Cena and Lesnar figures to be on tap in the coming weeks and months, but it is unclear if there are plans in place for Lesnar to be his final opponent.

During his farewell tour, Cena has already faced several Superstars who he has extensive history with, including Randy Orton, CM Punk and R-Truth, which still leaves big names like Seth Rollins, AJ Styles, Roman Reigns and even The Rock as possibilities if WWE wants him to finish his career with someone from his past.

Regardless of who Cena ends up sharing the last stop of his retirement tour with, it has been a wild and unpredictable ride, and WWE fans figure to soak up everything Cena has to offer over the final four months of his career.
