Game of Thrones Star Hafthor Bjornsson Sets World Record with 505kg Deadlift on Video
Hafþór Björnsson claimed the world deadlift record and it thankfully didn't require a trial by combat.
Björnsson, who played "The Mountain" on Game of Thrones, lifted 505 kilograms (1,113 pounds) at the Eisenhart Black Competition in Germany over the weekend:
That bests Eddie Hall's competition record of 500 kilograms at the World Deadlift Championships in 2016.
Hall congratulated Björnsson on Instagram.
"Massive respect to Thor for making history & setting the official WR at 505kg," he wrote. "That's one hell of a pull. Records are made to be broken."
Björnsson previously lifted 501 kilograms in May 2020, but that came behind closed doors in his native Iceland. For many fans of the sport, Hall's effort in 2016 remained the mark to beat.
Björnsson is recognized mostly for his work on Game of Thrones, and his other acting credits include The Northman and the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie.
The 36-year-old is also a decorated powerlifter, winning the 2018 World's Strongest Man and finishing runner-up in 2014, 2016 and 2017. In addition, he pulled off a three-peat at the Arnold Strongman Classic from 2018-20.
