Goldberg Says He's 'Pissed Off at the Way I Went Out' amid WWE Retirement, Speech
Goldberg's wrestling career came to an end at Saturday Night's Main Event.
As the wrestling icon gave his WWE retirement speech, Goldberg was cut short as the network went off the air. He spoke out about the frustrating moment on Tuesday.
"Let's just say I'm pissed off at the way I went out," he said on The Ariel Helwani Show. "I put so much into it and I don't feel as though the effort was reciprocated to put a stamp on what I've accomplished... I think it could have been done a little bit differently, that's all."
Goldberg said that WWE and NBC, which broadcast the match, knew he planned to give a speech.
"They cut me off 30 seconds into my speech," he said. "You don't do that."
Ultimately, Goldberg feels as if he was slighted by having his speech cut off prematurely. He said he could've been given a "classier" moment to end his career with.
"I think it doesn't matter, because it's live television and you can plan for it," he said. "And I know it is what is, the match might've gone long and this and that and whatever it is. I just think that it could have been a little classier prepared than it was. That's a mild understatement."
Saturday marked Goldberg's first appearance in the ring since 2022. He hoped to end his career with a victory, but came up short after Gunther used a Sleeper Hold to defeat him.
Following the loss, Goldberg, who played football at the University of Georgia and later with the Atlanta Falcons, gave a heartfelt speech to the crowd in Atlanta.
"Every time I step in this ring, it’s with every one of you with me. All these kids, it’s the reason why I did what I did. I grew up wanting to be a professional football player. I was lucky enough to play at the University of Georgia. Go Dawgs! I was lucky enough to play for the Atlanta Falcons," Goldberg said (h/t Ian Carey of F4WOnline). "And I was lucky enough to beat Hogan in front of 45,000 of y’all. I’ve never thought about this moment because I never thought it would come. But I couldn’t have done it without you. Each and every one of you."
WWE later published his full 10-minute farewell:
While Goldberg's goodbye to wrestling didn't go the way he would have liked, he had a tremendous career across his time with the WCW and WWE.
