J.J. Spaun Says He Watched Tiger Woods' 2008 Highlights During US Open Rain Delay
U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun said on the Pat McAfee Show that he watched highlights of Tiger Woods' win at the 2008 U.S. Open during the fourth-round rain delay on Sunday at Oakmont Country Club.
Spaun bogeyed five of his first six holes and was five-over when the rain delay began. However, Spaun was excellent after the rain delay ended, shooting three-under over his final seven holes, capping the day with a 65-foot birdie on the last for the win.
Simply put, it was a tremendous comeback, perhaps influenced by Spaun watching one of the greatest major performances of all time.
Woods played the 2008 U.S. Open on a double stress fracture of his left tibia as well as a torn left ACL. But he forced a playoff with Rocco Mediate after making a 12-foot birdie on the last hole to force an 18-hole playoff the next day.
Woods and Mediate both shot even par through 18 holes, forcing sudden death. Mediate made bogey on the par-four seventh, while Woods made par for the win.
As for Spaun, the first-time major winner ended up victorious by two shots over Robert MacIntyre. He was also the only player to shoot under-par for the tournament, finishing with a one-under 279.
