Spaun clinched his first major title in dramatic fashion, sinking a 64-foot birdie putt—the longest made by any player that week—to win the 125th U.S. Open. He shot even par on Sunday to finish 1-under (279) overall, two strokes ahead of runner-up Robert MacIntyre.

After a weather delay of more than 90 minutes on Sunday in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, Spaun weathered both the literal and figurative storm to claim his first major title at 34 years old.

Spaun entered the final round one stroke behind 54-hole leader Sam Burns but looked out of contention early, bogeying five of his first six holes. However, he staged a remarkable comeback, notching four birdies on the back nine and firing a 3-under 32 down the stretch to complete the improbable victory.

The win comes less than a year after Spaun considered retirement as he faced the possibility of losing his PGA Tour card.

“I think it was kind of in the middle of the season last year when I played really terrible to start the year,” Spaun said at the Players Championship (h/t Golf Digest). “I had some health stuff, like, fighting off viruses and flus that put me physically unwell. I didn't want to blame that on my poor play. But halfway through the season it was looking like I was going to be done, like not going to finish 125, and I kind of was thinking about, ‘Hey, I played eight years out here, I've got a great family, I've accomplished, I've won. So it's not the end of the world if this is how it ends for me.’ With that, that's kind of when my attitude changed.”

The Los Angeles native has had a breakout 2025 campaign, including a near-win at the Players Championship in March, where he narrowly lost to Rory McIlroy in a playoff.
