Scottie Scheffler Says 'I Haven't Really Had My Swing' Ahead of Final Round at US Open
World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler told reporters that he hasn't really had his swing over the first three rounds of the U.S. Open, which has featured him shooting four-over.
"Usually over the course of 72 holes, you have a couple days, swing feels pretty good, a couple days where maybe it's off," Scheffler told reporters, per ESPN's Brooke Pryor.
"Weeks where you win, maybe you have three or four days of good ball striking. ... This week I've had three days where I haven't really had my swing, and I've been battling out there, still have a chance -- albeit in an outside chance."
Per the US Open website, Scheffler is 44th in strokes gained off the tee and 28th in strokes gained approach for the week. He's 22-of-42 in fairways hit (T-48) and 31-of-54 in greens-in-regulation (T-45).
That's a far cry from his norm.
Per PGATour.com, Scheffler is first on Tour this year in strokes gained: off-the-tee, strokes gained: approach and strokes gained: tee-to-green. He's 11th in total driving and sixth in greens in regulation.
Scheffler, of course, is near-untouchable at his best. He's proven that again this year with three wins, including his third major (PGA Championship).
This week hasn't featured his best, but that's the case for many at the brutally tough Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, where only three players were under par going into the weekend.
All told, though, Scheffler is still T-11 going into Sunday. Winning this tournament appears to be a long shot at eight strokes back, but finishing top five at a major for the ninth time in his career is certainly possible if he finds his swing and gets on a run. Carlos Ortiz is there right now at solo fifth (even par).
