US Open Golf Leaderboard 2025 Review of Top Scorecards and Player Stats on Day 1
Oakmont Country Club lived up to the hype as one of the toughest major tournament venues on Thursday.
Low scores were incredibly hard to come by in the first round of the 2025 US Open.
JJ Spaun dropped the best score of the round from the morning tee times and that stuck for the duration of the day.
Spaun turned in a rare bogey-free four-under 66 to take the 18-hole lead.
Only a handful of other golfers finished under par in western Pennsylvania on a day that challenged even the best players in the world, like Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

JJ Spaun’s Bogey Free Round
1 of 3
JJ Spaun benefited from some tremendous par saves and a quartet of birdies on the back nine to take the 18-hole lead.
Spaun broke out to his advantage during his first nine holes on course. He carded four birdies on the back nine before he made the turn to the front.
On the front nine, the American saved par on all nine holes to maintain his advantage.
Only Sungjae Im eclipsed Spaun’s score during the afternoons wave, but Im quickly dropped below due to a few bogeys.
Spaun is far from in the clear from Oakmont’s challenges.
He had a handful of long par saves that, on another day, would turn into a litany of bogeys. If he doesn’t have the same par-saving magic on Friday, he could drop back toward the pack.
Even with his Round 1 lead, Spaun is only 12-1 to win the tournament. Full odds via DraftKings:
- Jon Rahm ( 550)
- Scottie Scheffler ( 650)
- Collin Morikawa ( 1200)
- Brooks Koepka ( 1200)
- J.J. Spaun ( 1200)
- Bryson DeChambeau ( 1600)
Brooks Koepka’s Resurgent Round
2 of 3
Brooks Koepka hasn’t been much of a factor at majors recently. He missed the cut at the season's first two majors and finished outside the top 20 at every major in 2024.
The five-time major winner stood out among the top golfers in the field with a two-under 68.
The highlight of Koepka’s round was an eagle on the par-five fourth hole.
Koepka traded two bogeys and two birdies on his scorecard on the back nine.
Koepka’s birdies on the back nine occurred on consecutive holes at Nos. 17 and 18.
The LIV Tour member knows what it takes to win on difficult US Open courses, so it wouldn’t come as a surprise if he manages his way through Oakmont for three more rounds to be in contention on the back nine come Sunday.
Scottie Scheffler Sits Seven Shots Back
3 of 3
PGA champion and pre-tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler shot a three-over 73 on Thursday.
Scheffler started well with a par on the first round and a birdie on the second, but then his round went haywire.
Scheffler carded three bogeys over four holes and kept giving shots back to the course throughout the round.
The world's No. 1 golfer finished the round with six bogeys and just three birdies.
Of course, Scheffler can't be counted out of the tournament just yet, but his Thursday proved that Oakmont can challenge even the most in-form golfers in the world.
