The Opening 2015: Meet the 6 Recruits Who Committed in Beaverton

Damon SaylesJul 10, 2015

BEAVERTON, Ore. — The Opening featured more than 160 of the nation's best athletes competing in various drills, seven-on-seven tournaments and lineman challenges.

The event, held at Nike World Headquarters, also included six players announcing their verbal commitments. Five of the six will take their talents to the Pac-12 Conference.

Followers of USC, Oregon, Washington and Notre Dame welcomed their new commits on Thursday and Friday. Here are the six players, in alphabetical order, who ended their recruiting processes at the event nicknamed "Football Heaven."

3-Star WR Chase Claypool

1 of 6

Hometown (School): Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada (Abbotsford)

Size: 6'5", 205 lbs

247Sports Player Ranking: No. 331 overall (No. 55 WR)

Committed to Notre Dame

The top-ranked player in Canada, Chase Claypool verbally committed to Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish on Friday. Claypool chose Notre Dame over Rutgers, Oregon, Michigan and several other schools.

Claypool was impressive throughout The Opening, using his size to his advantage against smaller defenders. He can go to Notre Dame as either a big wide receiver or a flex tight end. Either way, he's expected to be a playmaker.

Claypool said his relationship with associate head coach/receivers coach Mike Denbrock helped seal the deal. He became Notre Dame's 12th overall commit.

4-Star LB Camilo Eifler

2 of 6

Hometown (School): Oakland, California (Bishop O'Dowd)

Size: 6'1 ½", 215 lbs

247Sports Player Ranking: No. 173 overall (No. 13 OLB)

Committed to Washington

Washington picked up its fifth commit of the 2016 class Thursday in linebacker Camilo Eifler, who also happens to be the Huskies' top-ranked commit for this class.

A major get for Chris Petersen and Co., Eifler chose Washington over offers from Oregon, Cal, Michigan, Texas A&M and others. He is a versatile outside linebacker with good strength and decent speed.

Eifler showed that he is an athletic defender, as well, during Nike combine testing on Wednesday. He recorded a vertical jump of 40.2 inches and threw the power ball 41 feet.

4-Star CB Jared Mayden

3 of 6

Hometown (School): Sachse, Texas (Sachse)

Size: 6'0", 190 lbs

247Sports Player Ranking: No. 134 overall (No. 11 CB)

Committed to Oregon

Oregon picked up a stud cornerback in Jared Mayden on Thursday. A shutdown defender, Mayden chose Oregon out of 45 offers.

Mayden had a goal of committing during The Opening, and he was able to achieve all of his goals step by step. He chose the Ducks over Ohio State, Florida State, Alabama, Michigan and several other programs.

"I just worked for it and didn't allow any catches at the [Dallas] regional," Mayden said. "I got my invite, and ever since then, I've been working to where if I commit on TV, nobody will have anything to say. I want them to all say, 'He's a dog. He's going to go out and get after it.'"

4-Star S C.J. Pollard

4 of 6

Hometown (School): Gardena, California (Junipero Serra)

Size: 6'1", 180 lbs

247Sports Player Ranking: No. 241 overall (No. 10 S)

Committed to USC

The Trojans got the news they long expected Thursday when C.J. Pollard committed to Steve Sarkisian and his program.

What the Trojans get in Pollard is a super versatile athlete who can play anywhere in the secondary and at outside linebacker, if necessary. He chose USC over offers from Oregon, Michigan, Arizona State and a host of other schools.

"I'm going to play safety, but I'm down to play whatever position they put me," he said. "I'm even down to play nickel."

4-Star WR Trevon Sidney

5 of 6

Hometown (School): La Puente, California (Bishop Amat)

Size: 5'11", 160 lbs

247Sports Player Ranking: No. 84 overall (No. 11 WR)

Committed to USC

Another California athlete stays home as Trevon Sidney committed to USC on Friday. He's a big get for Steve Sarkisian, as the Trojans now have 16 commits—including four athletes expected to play wide receiver.

Sidney was believed to be a longtime USC lean, but he also had offers from UCLA, Michigan, Notre Dame, Washington and several other programs.

The Trojans are getting a reliable receiver who knows how to get yards after the catch. Sidney can be a good outside threat, but he may be most beneficial as an inside receiver.

4-Star LB La'Mar Winston

6 of 6

Hometown (School): Portland, Oregon (Central Catholic)

Size: 6'1 ½", 200 lbs

247Sports Player Ranking: No. 239 overall (No. 18 OLB)

Committed to Oregon

Considered the hometown kid, La'Mar Winston chose Oregon over Stanford, UCLA, Washington and several other schools. Winston is the No. 2 player in the state of Oregon, and the Ducks got a good one.

In short, Winston is an athlete. He has good speed and field vision, and he's able to cover from sideline to sideline. Winston is a two-way star at his high school, so he also plays with the hands of a wide receiver, which helps in coverage as a defender.

Winston can be a big surprise in Pac-12 play sooner rather than later. Look for him to see time at outside linebacker, but don't be surprised if the Ducks try him as a nickel type of athlete.
