1 Word for Every Top 25 College Football Team's 2026 Expectations

Before a ball is kicked, before a play is called, every team in the college football world has a list of expectations.

Some goals are easily quantifiable, like a conference championship or a national title. Other targets, such as progress or excellence or validation are open to interpretation—yet still very legitimate.

As the 2026 season beckons, we're looking at expectations for Top 25 teams.

While the chosen word is a personal view of the perception around each program, the order is a reflection of the preseason Coaches Poll.

25-21. Missouri, Houston, Clemson, Iowa, Utah

25. Missouri Tigers: Competitive

When your preseason outlook includes five Top 15 teams, well, good luck. Mizzou hasn't defeated a year-end Top 25 program in the last two seasons, either. Surviving the entirety of this schedule would be shocking. Still, three straight years of eight-plus regular-season wins means the Tigers should be respected.

24. Houston Cougars: Breakthrough

Willie Fritz, unsurprisingly, has elevated the program in a hurry. Houston went 9-3 last regular season and earned a 10th victory in a bowl. The challenge this fall is rising a bit higher in the Big 12 after finishing fourth in the conference last season.

23. Clemson Tigers: Recovery

Clemson had not failed to reach nine victories since 2010, Dabo Swinney's second season. Last season was a downright disaster as the Tigers tumbled from a preseason favorite to a 7-6 campaign. Swinney is not widely viewed as being on a hot seat, but that possibility looms if Clemson does not bounce back.

22. Iowa Hawkeyes: Typical

In my experience, even the most diehard Iowa fans embrace their reality. Are the Hawkeyes going to win a national title? Not with their offensive style. Conversely, they haven't ended shy of bowl eligibility since 2012. Iowa is bound to annoy the best of the Big Ten, regardless of whether that means 10-2 or 7-5.

21. Utah Utes: Trophy

Utah won consecutive Pac-12 titles in 2021 and 2022, slipped a little because of quarterback issues for two years, then jumped to 11-2 last season. The return of QB Devon Dampier and a reasonably favorable slate suggests the Utes will be in the thick of the Big 12 race.

20-16. SMU, Washington, Tennessee, Penn State, Michigan

20. SMU Mustangs: Contention

Following an American title in 2023, SMU finished as the ACC runner-up in 2024 and missed the 2025 championship game on a tiebreaker. Kevin Jennings Jr. is entering his third year as the starting QB, too. SMU, clearly for good reason, expects it will contend in the ACC.

19. Washington Huskies: Threaten

I'm not necessarily sold on Washington as a Big Ten threat, especially given a November slate with Penn State, Indiana and Oregon. But with a stout offensive line in front of Demond Williams Jr., the Dawgs can make genuine noise in the league if a retooled defense is solid.

18. Tennessee Volunteers: Hover

There is too much uncertainty at quarterback—a pretty important spot—to believe in Tennessee as a championship team. Simultaneously, there's a whole lot of surrounding talent to prop up an inexperienced QB. It's in the realm of possibility UT sneaks into the CFP, although that's an absolute best-case scenario.

17. Penn State Nittany Lions: Restoration

James Franklin's tenure ended in miserable fashion, but Penn State managed to pull Matt Campbell out of Iowa State. He's a proven program-builder that has reignited belief in Happy Valley. Throw in missing Indiana, Ohio State and Oregon on this schedule—a total reverse from 2025—and the new-look Nittany Lions have an opportunity for a rapid turnaround under Campbell.

16. Michigan Wolverines: Ascend

Penn State is essentially hoping to repeat 2025 Michigan, capitalizing on a favorable slate to overshadow some clear deficits. For the Wolverines, that was their offense in the toughest games. Michigan will likely not win the Big Ten but needs to show it can actually stick with IU, OSU, Oregon during the regular season.

15-11. BYU, USC, LSU, Texas Tech, Alabama

15. BYU Cougars: Finish

Over the last two seasons, the program has posted a 23-4 record with a 15-3 mark in conference play. BYU missed the 2024 conference title game on a tiebreaker, then a lopsided loss to Texas Tech in the 2025 version cost the Cougars a shot at the Playoff. They expect, and appear built well enough, to win the league.

14. USC Trojans: Leap

Lincoln Riley arrived in 2022 as the program savior. Losing in the Pac-12 Championship Game stung, but he immediately sparked USC to an 11-win year. Surely that would continue, right? The total 24-15 record since then has soured the feeling around Riley, who's under increasing pressure. There isn't a large margin for error here, but USC's talent, at its best, is a Playoff-worthy group.

13. LSU Tigers: Turnaround

In a beautiful segue, now we're talking about program savior Lane Kiffin! The master of the transfer portal has settled at LSU, where a fanbase is clamoring for real contention again. Beyond all of the transition, the schedule—which includes Clemson, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Alabama, Texas and Tennessee—is a gauntlet. But there is no grace period for Kiffin in Baton Rouge.

12. Texas Tech Red Raiders: Control

Not only did Texas Tech win a Big 12 crown last season, the team dominated all year. Arizona State beat the Red Raiders, yet nobody else stayed within 22 points. Texas Tech is aiming to prove it has that level of ability again.

11. Alabama Crimson Tide: Rise

It's been six whole seasons since Alabama celebrated a national title. The fan base is getting restless. In seriousness, though, the expectation in Tuscaloosa is always a title. Bama recovered from a terrible early loss to Florida State in 2025, but ugly showings in the SEC Championship Game and CFP quarterfinals hurt the perception of the season. The team needs to play better in the biggest games this year.

10-6. Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Miami, Indiana

10. Ole Miss Rebels: Defy

No more Kiffin, no problem, right? That's the mentality around Ole Miss, which returns star quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and a wave of talented transfers to replace the players who left in the portal. Ole Miss is well-respected but a shade below the SEC's top tier. Time to prove us wrong, Rebs.

9. Oklahoma Sooners: Elevate

This defense was awesome last season. However, the unit's excellence also helped cover for a competent, unimpressive offense—and John Mateer's midseason hand injury didn't help matters. The goal is clear: Be more effective on the scoring side to complement another superb defense.

8. Texas A&M Aggies: Prominence

Texas A&M took a valuable stride forward in 2025, winning 11 games for only the fifth time in school history and hosting a CFP game. But to truly join the ranks of the national elite, the Aggies need more. They want to win an SEC title, win a Playoff game, threaten for more.

7. Miami Hurricanes: Overpower

Mario Cristobal has assembled, by far, the ACC's most talented roster. Darian Mensah is a top QB, the backfield is absurdly deep and there may not be a better receiver duo in the country than Malachi Toney and Cooper Barkate. The defensive line and secondary can be fantastic. Miami should not merely win the ACC; it's looking to put together a Texas Tech-like run and control almost every game.

6. Indiana Hoosiers: Validation

Even if Curt Cignetti's squad doesn't have back-to-back titles in store, Indiana can further prove it has staying power. We've watched any number of champions fade in the following year after a big roster turnover, but IU can bolster its rising reputation with another CFP trip in 2026.

5-1. Notre Dame, Texas, Georgia, Oregon, Ohio State

5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Dominance

The redemption tour is a much-anticipated one in South Bend. Led by a likely top-tier defense, Notre Dame is an obvious pick to make the CFP. After last season's controversial exclusion, the Fighting Irish are undoubtedly focused on building a bulletproof résumé in 2026.

4. Texas Longhorns: Excellence

Every year, the hype machine cranks out expectations for Texas. The reality is the program only has one conference title since reaching the national championship in 2009, and the Longhorns are 0-2 in their recent Playoff trips. Led by Arch Manning, UT will only be satisfied with returning to national glory.

3. Georgia Bulldogs: Normal

This is just what we do. Georgia has notched 11-plus wins in eight consecutive years, excluding the shortened 2020 campaign. Four of the last five seasons have included a spot in the CFP. That's the minimum benchmark of success for UGA, and there is little reason to believe it won't happen again.

2. Oregon Ducks: Championship

The veterans did not return to help Oregon win 10 games and make another CFP appearance. No, those players put the NFL on hold in order to chase a national championship. Winning the Big Ten would be nice, but nothing else truly matters except for hoisting that CFP trophy.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes: Perfection

Ohio State has an even greater run of consistency than UGA, rattling off 11-plus victories in 13 straight years with the same 2020 asterisk. After winning a national title in 2024, the Buckeyes committed the grave sin of going 12-2 and making the Playoff last season. The only acceptable outcome for OSU fans is the shiny trophy, and they won't tolerate anything less.
