Todd McShay Compares LaNorris Sellers to 'Bigger Jalen Hurts' Ahead of 2025 CFB Season

Ahead of his potential entry into the 2026 NFL draft, South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers is already drawing comparisons to one of the league's top quarterbacks.

Speaking Monday on his McShay Show podcast for The Ringer (beginning at the 25:10 mark), McShay called Sellers a "bigger Jalen Hurts."

Listed at 6'3" and 240 pounds, Sellers has ideal size at the quarterback position, whereas Hurts has overcome being on the smaller side at 6'1" and 223 pounds.

McShay expressed his belief that Sellers is similar to Hurts during his time at Alabama before he transferred to Oklahoma and developed as a passer in his final collegiate season in 2019.

While McShay suggested Sellers doesn't yet take care of the football as well as Hurts did in college, he also noted that Sellers has only one year as a starter under his belt.

Despite his perceived deficiencies, Hurts went to the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft, and he won the Eagles' starting job by the end of his rookie season.

Over his five NFL seasons, Hurts is a two-time Pro Bowler who has led the Eagles to the Super Bowl twice. That includes a decisive, 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX last season, which ended with Hurts being named Super Bowl MVP.

Hurts has not put up huge passing numbers, as he has never reached the 4,000-yard mark, nor has he thrown for more than 23 touchdowns in a season, but he has largely protected the ball, throwing fewer than 10 interceptions in three of his four seasons as a starter.

He has also done a ton of damage as a runner throughout his NFL career, rushing for 3,133 yards and 55 touchdowns over five seasons.

After barely playing in 2023, Sellers started 12 games last season for a Gamecocks team that finished 9-4.

Sellers completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 2,534 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions, but he was at his most dynamic when running the football, as he rushed for 674 yards and seven scores.

With regard to Sellers' dual-threat ability, McShay said you "can't coach what he's got," adding that Sellers is just as fast, sudden and creative as Hurts.

On the heels of what was considered a weak quarterback class in the 2025 draft, the 2026 NFL draft could be much deeper at the position with Sellers, Texas' Arch Manning, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, Penn State's Drew Allar and Clemson's Cade Klubnik all eligible.

McShay believes Sellers may have the highest ceiling among those quarterbacks, which suggests that if he takes a big step forward at South Carolina in 2025, Sellers could put himself in the No. 1 overall pick conversation next year.
