The Big 12 will be celebrating its 30th season this year. The season will open on Aug. 23 in Dublin, Ireland, with Kansas State taking on Iowa State in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. It will be the first conference matchup in Big 12 history to be held in Week 0 and to be played abroad. The season will conclude with the Big 12 Championship Game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in the first week of December.
Defending Big 12 champion Arizona State will be looking to defend its crown this year after winning its first conference title since 2007. The Sun Devils went 11-3 in 2024 for an eight-win turnaround from the previous season, which was head coach Kenny Dillingham's first year with the program. The team lost to Texas 39-31 in a double-overtime classic in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
The Big 12 is currently holding its conference meetings in Orlando this week, and the shifting landscape of the College Football Playoff is one of the leading topics.
After last week's announcement that the CFP will move to a straight seeding model this fall, many are wondering if the field will eventually expand to 16 teams. Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark told The Athletic's Chris Vannini that he prefers a "5+11" model to give the conference a fair shot at being represented in the CFP.
"I don’t think 4-4-2-2 is fair," Yormark said. "I just don’t think that model speaks to who we are as a conference and what we mean to college football."
