Savy King Undergoes Heart Surgery After Collapsing in Angel City's NWSL Game
NWSL club Angel City FC announced early Wednesday morning that defender Savy King is recovering after undergoing surgery to correct a heart abnormality.
During the second half of Friday's match against the Utah Royals, King collapsed and was carried off the field on a stretcher. She was responsive and immediately taken to hospital after experiencing what Angel City FC described as a "medical event."
Despite the scary incident, the match continued, and Angel City went on to win 2-0 at home.
King's family released a statement in conjunction with Angel City FC on Wednesday, showing appreciation for those who have supported her and offered well wishes:
"On behalf of our entire family, along with Savy, we have been so moved by the love and support from Angel City players, staff, fans and community, as well as soccer fans across the country. We are blessed to share Savy is recovering well and we are looking forward to having her home with us soon."
The 20-year-old is originally from Santa Monica, California, and she played her college soccer at the University of North Carolina.
Bay FC selected King with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NWSL draft, but after one season with the club, she was traded to Angel City FC in February.
In addition to playing in the NWSL, King has represented the United States at the under-17 and under-20 levels, winning a bronze medal at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup last year.
Angel City, which is fifth out of 14 teams in the NWSL standings currently with a 4-2-2 record, will return to action Saturday in an away matchup with Bay FC.
