Deion Sanders Downplays Possible Colorado Contract Extension: I Ain’t Worried About Me
Deion Sanders isn't worried about not getting an extension with Colorado.
On Monday, Sanders, who is in the third year of a five-year deal with Colorado, brushed off recent speculation about his future with the Buffaloes.
“I don’t know,” he said, per USA Today's Brent Schrotenboer. “I ain’t worried about me. Let’s get everybody else straight first. Then I’m good.”
Sanders is contractually tied to Colorado through the 2027 season. If he continues his upward trajectory, it seems the Buffaloes will have no problem handing him an extension when the time comes.
Colorado, which went 1-11 in the season before Sanders' arrival, struggled a bit in Sanders' first year as it finished 4-8, but the Buffaloes took a major leap in 2024. They finished the season 9-4 and were an upset loss away from reaching the Big 12 title game. It was Colorado's best season since 2016 when it went 10-4.
Sanders put some pressure on Colorado this offseason as he entertained the Dallas Cowboys head coaching job. He said in February that he "did think about it" but ultimately stayed in Boulder.
Considering what he's done at Colorado, Sanders will likely be in the mix for more coaching jobs, whether college or NFL, next offseason, which could work in his favor as he looks to get a lucrative extension.
For now, Sanders will keep his focus on the season ahead. The Buffaloes lost two potential top-10 draft picks in quarterback Shedeur Sanders and wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter and will have work to do to keep moving in the right direction.
It won't be easy to replace those two, but the Buffaloes will at least have their head coach back in 2025.
