Tennessee AD 'Very Disappointed' Nebraska Canceled Upcoming CFB Series in 2026, 2027
The Tennessee Volunteers are evidently not pleased with losing an upcoming non-conference series against Nebraska.
Pete Thamel of ESPN reported Friday that the upcoming football series between Nebraska and Tennessee had been canceled. Following the report, Tennessee athletic director Danny White clarified, saying that Nebraska canceled the series and that the Volunteers are "disappointed."
Thamel reported that a reason for the switch was the Cornhuskers' desire to have eight home games in 2027. Nebraska was set to host the Volunteers in 2026 and travel to Knoxville in 2027.
The matchup would have pitted a 2024 playoff team from the SEC in Tennessee against a Big Ten team in Nebraska that is building for the future and hopes to be a playoff contender in 2026 and 2027.
The Volunteers and Cornhuskers have met three times in their program's histories, all of which were in bowl games. Nebraska holds a 2-1 series lead but Tennessee won the most recent matchup in the 2016 Music City Bowl.
The two teams have never played at home sites, so the series would have been a first in the history of the matchup. Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald reported that the series was originally agreed to in 2006 for the 2016 and 2017 seasons but had been pushed back to 2026 and 2027.
