Jaguars: Full Position Breakdown and Depth-Chart Analysis at Wide Receiver

Evan ReierJun 17, 2015

The Jacksonville Jaguars have one of the youngest teams in the NFL, and there may not be a positional group that better shows this than the wide receivers. However, age is not the telling sign of success, and there is plenty of talent to help this offense succeed.

Despite a young average age of 23.7, levels of talent are apparent in the wide receiver core. That's not to say that the gap goes from star to scrub, but there are differences in quality.

In the top tier, there are Allen Robinson, Marqise Lee, Allen Hurns and Rashad Greene. All are in the top tier for various reasons, and some are more worthy than others, but these are the preferred go-to receivers for the 2015 season.

Robinson recently came back into OTAs, as John Oehser of Jaguars.com reported, and has not wasted any time showing he deserves the top spot. The second-year receiver had 48 receptions, 548 yards and two touchdowns in 2014, but it's obvious he isn't satisfied.

His injury in the London game against the Dallas Cowboys ended his rookie year in heartbreak, but he's hungry and ready to get back with the Jaguars. He's the top guy, and it's fair to expect him to have a big season if he and quarterback Blake Bortles can link up smoothly.

Behind Robinson there is Lee. Lee has dealt with nagging injuries, which are leaving him out of minicamp, according to Oehser, and it's fair to wonder if he'll be able to get over them. However, Lee has the potential to be a big-play receiver, and he's got to be the preferred No. 2 receiver.

But where Lee is almost unreliable because of his injuries, Hurns has the same type of play with less injury concern, albeit with less talent. The undrafted free agent (UDFA) from 2014 blew up the 2014 preseason, and he showed his ability to score with two games with 100-plus yards and two touchdowns against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cincinnati Bengals

However, Hurns showed inconsistency in his play. He may not have Lee's overall potential, but he could be a vital player if he can play his top game more often.

Finally, there's Greene. The fifth-round selection from the 2015 NFL draft is a rookie, but he's the truest and best slot receiver the Jaguars have. It's hard to judge how he'll do, but he deserves to be in the top tier.

Behind the first four, the second tier includes Ace Sanders, Arrelious Benn, Tandon Doss and Neal Sterling.

Sanders is a guy who can easily make it into the top tier, but he has to show continued improvement and dedication. A decent rookie season was shadowed by a troubled sophomore season, and while he offers big plays, he's most likely the go to punt returner than slot receiver.

Arrelious Benn and Tandon Doss are two of the most experienced receivers on the team, both entering their fifth year in the NFL. However, they are average at best for the Jaguars, and their main contributions will be helping the younger receivers learn and improve.

Finally, Sterling rounds out the second group. At first, it seemed like Sterling was going to be turned into a tight end, but all signs say no. Sterling could quickly move up the ranks with his 6'3", 238-pound frame, but that will have to be proven in game situations.

As Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union tweeted, Sterling missed minicamp Tuesday with a "tweaked" hamstring:

In the third of four levels, we have Bryan Walters, Damian Copeland, Tony Washington and Kasey Closs.

Walters, a Super Bowl XLVIII champion and the most experienced receiver, hasn't seen a lot of time offensively in his career, and while he could work his way up as a receiver, he's best as a returner. We'll see where he ends up playing the most in 2015.

Both Copeland and Washington have the potential to be decent receivers, but there's not enough time or space for them to make the team. Personally, Copeland seems like he can become a useful receiver, but it just doesn't look like it will work out.

Closs seems to be in a similar situation to Copeland and Washington, but he has ability as a returner. That's how he'll reach a final spot, but it's unlikely that'll happen or that he'll ever see much time as a returner.

The final tier sees a lone player: Justin Blackmon.

Blackmon, who's issues with substance abuse has seen him suspended for more games than he's played, should be considered nonexistent. He's got all the ability in the world, but it's apparent he's made no progress toward getting reinstated into the NFL, and that means we won't see him in 2015.

Will Justin Blackmon ever reappear on the Jaguars roster?

This lineup is based purely on a player's overall value as a receiver. Some players, such as Sanders and Closs, offer special teams help which may help them earn a final roster spot, but this is purely based on WR capabilities.

There is decent depth at WR, and despite the age, the group has current ability and future ability. Youth isn't always a bad thing, and while it won't be an easy ride for some, it'll be good to see these young players get a change they won't elsewhere.

In your opinion, who's the Jaguars best receiver? If the player is not in the poll (there's a limit on the number of options), comment below and we'll talk!
