Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Arturo Vidal, Raheem Sterling, Marco Reus Rumours

James DudkoMay 28, 2015

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger may like Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, but he'd have to pay a hefty sum to bring the Chile international to the Premier League. Juve have quoted the Gunners £28.4 million for the dynamic midfield workhorse, according to Italian source Tuttosport (h/t Metro's George Bellshaw).

Vidal-to-Arsenal speculation has been growing in recent weeks. DirecTV journalist Hernan Feler stated Vidal will join the Gunners following the upcoming Copa America (h/t the Independent's Tom Sheen). A lot of the basis for such rumours seems to be Vidal sharing the same agent as international team-mate and current Gunners star Alexis Sanchez.

Vidal's connection to Sanchez seems to be driving these rumours.

The ex-Barcelona man joined Arsenal last summer and proved to be an instant hit in England's top flight. He earned the PFA Fans' Player of the Year Award, per Sky Sports.

But while there's connection, the idea of Vidal following Sanchez to north London is curious. That's not an indictment of his talent. Wenger himself admitted to liking the player during a recent press conference, per the club's official site: "If you want me to say I like Arturo Vidal, yes I like Arturo Vidal."

Vidal is an exceptional midfielder as a rare complete player at his position. He combines energy with tenacity, creativity, flair and a real eye for goal.

Yet Arsenal already have a midfield man who does the same in the form of Aaron Ramsey. The Welshman has bagged 10 goals this season, according to the club's official site. He's a tireless box-to-box runner who shows real class on the ball.

Ramsey isn't the only player in Vidal's way within Arsenal's current squad. There's also Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to consider.

Then, there are the schemers Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky. There has also been the welcome emergence of Francis Coquelin this season. Even savvy veteran Mikel Arteta is still around.

A manager who finds it tough accommodating all of his current midfield options without disrupting the balance of his team would struggle to make room for Vidal.

Raheem Sterling Wants Arsenal Move

If there's little room for Vidal, it's a similar story for Liverpool's wantaway winger Raheem Sterling. The Anfield contract rebel wants a move to either Arsenal or bitter rival Chelsea to return to his London roots, per Daily Star writer Jonathan Green.

Sterling is certainly an intriguing prospect despite the unsavoury nature of his standoff with Liverpool. The 20-year-old boasts blistering pace but combines it with underrated, clever movement.

Sterling's runs off the ball and between the lines are always well-timed and dangerous. His big problem is what he does once he's sped into a scoring position.

Finding the net with regularity has been a major issue for the player, who managed just seven goals in the Premier League this season, per WhoScored.com. Anybody willing to spend big on Sterling now is buying his considerable potential rather than a finished product.

B/R's Sam Tighe recently described Sterling as a player with the potential to be world class:

Of course, Wenger has rarely been shy about rolling the dice on a player's promise. Trusting young talent has long been the defining feature of his tenure.

The Frenchman recently fuelled rumours Sterling could be heading to the Emirates Stadium this summer. Wenger offered a fairly weak denial when asked if he'll make an offer to Liverpool for his services, per James Olley of the London Evening Standard:

Yet recruiting Sterling would be a strange move, considering Wenger already has plenty of cheetah-fast forwards who can strike from wide areas. Theo Walcott is the most obvious, and although a swap deal involving Sterling has been mooted, such as in the Express, the former offers a greater goal threat.

Walcott is currently involved in his own contract standoff, although the lines between him and Arsenal are less fiercely drawn than those dividing Sterling and Liverpool. Walcott may even ink a new deal after the Gunners' forthcoming clash against Aston Villa in the FA Cup final, per MailOnline's Sami Mokbel.

If Walcott stays in the fold, Wenger will also have Sanchez, Chamberlain and precocious talent Serge Gnabry to deploy on the flanks. Even back-up centre-forward Danny Welbeck can operate out wide.

Sterling would be a luxury signing for the Gunners if he were to arrive this summer.

Marco Reus Back in Play

Another wide forward possibly on Arsenal's radar is Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus.

The Germany international had been a target for La Liga giants Real Madrid, but Los Blancos now won't pursue Reus this summer, according to Onda Cero, via AS, (h/t Football Espana). Madrid are apparently content with their current attacking options and will instead strengthen in deeper positions.

Yet while Reus may be back on the market, Arsenal don't need to look his way. Wenger can ignore the German for the same reasons he can pass on Sterling.

The Gunners have ample talent in forward areas, particularly from the flanks. Like Reus, Sanchez, Walcott and Welbeck can all play through the middle if asked.

The Dortmund man has battled injuries over the last two seasons at Dortmund and could be too physically fragile for the rough and tumble of the Premier League.

Like Madrid, Wenger's squad has more pressing concerns elsewhere. A quick, physical and prolific No. 9 to upgrade on Olivier Giroud is a must—as is recruiting a steady and commanding goalkeeper.

Both of those positions are more worthy of Wenger's attention and Arsenal's money than any of the names dominating the latest transfer rumours.
