Josh Morgan to Saints: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Tyler ConwayMay 17, 2015

Given a tryout to extend his career in New Orleans, veteran wide receiver Josh Morgan took advantage and wound up landing a contract with the Saints.

Pro Football Talk first reported that Morgan and New Orleans had come to undisclosed terms on an agreement. Morgan, 29, spent last season with the Chicago Bears. He made 10 receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown while playing in 13 games. He'd spent the previous two seasons in Washington, struggling to live up to a five-year contract he signed in free agency.

The Saints, who saw an exodus of players this offseason due to salary-cap moves, are in the midst of trying to rebuild their roster through veteran depth. Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reported Morgan was one of a number of veterans who were brought in over the weekend.

While landing a deal is a promising sign, Morgan is far from guaranteed a roster spot in September. New Orleans currently has 12 wide receivers listed on its depth chart, per OurLads, many of whom have younger, fresher legs. That Morgan has combined for just 30 receptions over the last two seasons does not bode well for his potential, either. Neither Washington nor Chicago was teeming with top-notch talent at the position outside its starting two.

Morgan's career has largely gone downhill since suffering a broken leg in 2011. After emerging as a solid secondary option during his second and third seasons in San Francisco, he hasn't averaged more than 10.7 yards per reception since that injury.

That said, the Saints' decision to sign him shows he at least has enough left in the tank to compete for a roster spot.
