Drogba and Ramires' Redemption: Twitter Reacts to Chelsea's Win at Leicester
Chelsea went into Wednesday evening's visit to the King Power Stadium aiming to set up a formal Premier League title celebration at home against Crystal Palace at the weekend.
Standing in their way, however, were a hungry Leicester side coming off the back of four consecutive wins and the belief they could pull off the greatest of relegation great escapes. It was an exciting enough prospect for Guy Mowbray to whip out an English classic...

After choosing to go striker-less against Arsenal at the weekend, Jose Mourinho decided to actually start a centre-forward in this game. But that man was Didier Drogba, who provoked plenty of discussion on Twitter prior to kick-off...
"Chelsea starting the game with only 10 men and 1 ancestor(Drogba)
— Thabang Tshepo (@ChiefTeller) April 29, 2015"
Mou also elected to hand Petr Cech a rare start...
Despite the Blues changes in personnel, the odds were stacked against the Foxes, heralding some painful and unnecessarily anti-equine propositions from some fans...
After a fast-paced opening from both sides, the standout player appeared to be 34-year-old Esteban Cambiasso, who formed a part of Mourinho's 2010 treble-winning Internazionale side. Cuchu played a sensational pass through to Leonardo Ulloa, who would have had a golden chance to open the scoring had his touch not let him down...
Within the first 20 minutes, Cambiasso was trending on Twitter alongside Branislav Ivanovic, who was putting in a very decent shift defensively and getting up the field to take some of his trademark long shots...
"Genuinely can't see anything wrong with Ivanovic up front instead of Drogba
— Yoghurt (@TheChelseaTalk) April 29, 2015"
Some suggested Leicester would field a weakened team against Chelsea in order to prevent injuries for their highly winnable forthcoming tie against Newcastle, but Nigel Pearson did no such thing.
Within 25 minutes, the plan looked like it was backfiring when Andy King and Robert Huth had to leave the field with injuries. It seemed like rotten luck, but some folks made some fairly nonsensical accusations of foul play (no pun intended)...
In the midst of the first-half action, attentions were also turned to Foxes manager Nigel Pearson and his terrifying demeanour...
"If Nigel Pearson turns this around after the controversy he caused then surely he's in for manager of the year.
— Adam Shreeve (@AdamShreevo) April 29, 2015"
Pearson's mood improved dramatically deep in first-half injury time when Cesar Azpilicueta slipped and allowed Marc Albrighton to shoot low past Cech to open the scoring...
Going into half-time, Ramires was trending as Chelsea fans were dissatisfied with his—and Drogba's—performances...
"Take ramires off as well been very complacent as well been trying a cross that hasn't worked for him for years
— Jack (@Jlabrace) April 29, 2015"
"I'm so angry with Jose y'know. What has starting Drogba and Ramires done to benefit the team??
— April Baby! (@TrackMusiq) April 29, 2015"
Mou failed to make any half-time changes, but this seemed to be a wise decision in light of the fact that Drogba found the net less than three minutes after the restart...
As the hour mark approached, Willian started trending due to his impressive performance...
In the 79th minute, Chelsea grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat when John Terry scrambled home after Kasper Schmeichel parried a Gary Cahill header...
"John Terry nips in to pick up someone else's seconds, not for the first time.
— Paddy Power (@paddypower) April 29, 2015"
Four minutes after captain Terry gave the visitors the lead, Ramires put the contest out of reach with a lovely strike. Yes, that's the same Ramires Chelsea fans wanted removed from the field—along with fellow goalscorer Drogba—at half-time....
"What a boring goal by Ramires can hardly keep my eyes open
— Ꮸallum (@callum_niven) April 29, 2015"
Sadly, it appeared that the Special One missed Ramires' moment of glory...
The game finished with three points being awarded to the Champions elect, who will be putting the champagne on ice and plotting the open-top bus tour in the coming days...
