Sportsnet Canada: Sharks To Interview Randy Carlyle

Wednesday, April 24

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet Canada, the Sharks have received permission to interview former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle for their vacancy:

On April 21, the Sharks and McLellan parted ways after a successful seven-year stretch that included a 40-33-9 mark in 2014-15. McLellan told The Associated Press (via ESPN.com) that he sees the franchise going through a potentially long rebuilding phase: "This team is clearly in a rebuild. With one year left, heading forward I had to analyze where everything was going. I felt with some of the answers I got that it was time."

Despite the coaching change, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com noted general manager Doug Wilson will return next season after a statement released by team owner Hasso Plattner.

Carlyle has an extensive head coaching resume dating back to the 2005-06 season when he took over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. He won a Stanley Cup in his second year and made the playoffs in five of his six full seasons with the franchise.

After being fired by the Ducks in November 2011, he was unemployed for three months before taking over in Toronto. The 59-year-old led the Maple Leafs to the postseason in his first full season in 2012-13, but he won 59 games with 129 points over the next two years before being let go.

The rebuilding Sharks figure to have an influx of talent to build around with eight draft picks, including the ninth overall pick.
