Biggest Summer 2015 Transfer Needs for Every Premier League Club
From Chelsea to West Ham United to Burnley, this slideshow aims to cover the biggest summer transfer needs for every Premier League club.
Instead of just pointing out which position the Premier League club needs to fill, this slideshow will offer a suggested signing.
Please note: The suggested signing is hypothetical and not a transfer prediction.
The Premier League clubs are ranked according to their current standing.
20. Burnley
1 of 20Suggested Signing: Norwegian attacking midfielder Stefan Johansen, 24, Celtic.
The majority of Burnley's attacks go through Danny Ings, who is running down his contract and will likely exercise his right to a free transfer in the summer.
If Ings leaves, his productivity needs to be replaced.
Johansen is serviceable from an advanced position and is on the rise.
"The Norwegian press are very good at talking up players and they can continue with that," Celtic boss Ronny Deila said, per the Daily Record. "Celtic is the right place to be for [Johansen] and he is one of the players we want to build the team around."
Burnley would need to present a great pitch because Deila clearly doesn't want Johansen to leave Celtic Park.
19. Queens Park Rangers
2 of 20Suggested Signing: German centre-back Tobias Strobl, 24, Hoffenheim.
Conceding 59 goals in 33 Premier League games is why Queens Park Rangers are on course to suffer relegation again.
It is unlikely that QPR will sign a top centre-back, so they will have to target a top-flight-standard footballer and hope he overachieves a la Matt Phillips.
Tobias Strobl is no Niklas Sule, but he would bring above-average intercepting ability and can play across the back line.
Strobl is currently placed at No. 85 in Kicker's Bundesliga player rankings.
18. Leicester City
3 of 20Suggested Signing: Slovenian centre-back Dominic Maroh, 28, Cologne.
Leicester City need a centre-back who can organise the back line and provide stability.
Dominic Maroh has helped Kevin Wimmer grow into a top centre-back prospect. In that case, Maroh could perhaps also assist in Liam Moore's development.
Maroh is currently placed at No. 40 in Kicker's Bundesliga player rankings.
17. Hull City
4 of 20Suggested Signing: Brazilian left-winger Diego Rigonato, 27, Reims.
Evading the attention of Fabinho, Diego zipped into space on the left flank and scored from an acute angle in Reims' recent 3-1 defeat to Monaco.
Monaco have the best defence in Ligue 1—23 goals conceded from 33 games—so Diego can produce the goods against top teams.
Diego could provide flair and trickery on the left flank when Hull City don't play with wing-backs.
16. Sunderland
5 of 20Suggested Signing: Spanish centre-forward Gerard Moreno, 23, Villarreal.
Sunderland may baulk at targeting a prolific second-tier No. 9, having been burned by Jozy Altidore.
Gerard Moreno is overshadowed because he rotates in and out of the starting XI and is nowhere near as talented as teammate Luciano Vietto.
That said, Moreno finds ways to score. He notched four goals in seven UEFA Europa League games and five goals in six Copa del Rey games this season.
He has proven capable of producing goals, which is what Sunderland need whether they are in the Premier League or the Championship next season.
15. Aston Villa
6 of 20Suggested Signing: Paraguayan attacking midfielder/centre-forward Raul Bobadilla, 27, Augsburg.
Raul Bobadilla is, at times, a rampaging bull.
However, he is not just an intimidating and bluster-filled footballer who runs around: Bobadilla can weave past opposing defenders, shoots with both feet and is able to interchange multiple positions.
14. Newcastle United
7 of 20Suggested Signing: Dutch centre-back Joost van Aken, 20, Heerenveen.
Mike Williamson is a testament to how mental fortitude can trump talent, given he has lasted five Premier League seasons.
Fair play to Williamson, who started his career at Torquay United.
Bizarrely, WhoScored.com has listed concentration as a "strong" strength of his.
If anything, it should be tagged as "very weak," considering he lacks the anticipation skills to routinely intercept passes, easily loses his markers and has looked out of his depth in the Premier League.
Williamson has contributed to Newcastle United having the second-worst defence—54 goals conceded from 33 games—in the Premier League this season.
Joost van Aken is a solid defender, yet lacks the hype that would attract a big-money offer from a major club, which opens the door for Newcastle United.
At least with Van Aken, Newcastle United can depend on his upside and hope he develops into a Premier League-standard centre-back.
Whereas, Williamson is declining drastically.
13. West Bromwich Albion
8 of 20Suggested Signing: Dutch centre-forward Michiel Kramer, 26, ADO Den Haag.
If West Bromwich Albion sell Saido Berahino in the summer transfer window, the Baggies need a handy No. 9.
Brown Ideye is too inconsistent and Victor Anichebe is a squad-filler at Premier League level.
Michiel Kramer could be an aerial outlet for West Bromwich Albion. He has knack for being in the right place at the right time, as Ajax found out when he scored a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw earlier this season, and he hustles to win the ball back.
He just needs to avoid following through on his challenges.
Kramer is in career-best form, scoring 16 goals in 29 Eredivisie games so far this term.
12. Everton
9 of 20Suggested Signing: German goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, 24, Eintracht Frankfurt.
Tim Howard pulled off one of the best saves in the Premier League this season when he denied Graziano Pelle during Everton's 1-0 win against Southampton at the start of April.
However, Howard has not been at his 2014 FIFA World Cup best throughout the campaign.
To test Howard, Everton should have an heir apparent.
Trapp is an elite goalkeeper unlike Joel Robles, who is still an unpolished project.
In Kicker's Bundesliga player rankings for goalkeepers only, Trapp is placed at No. 4.
11. Crystal Palace
10 of 20Suggested Signing: Guadeloupean centre-forward/right-winger Claudio Beauvue, 27, Guingamp.
None of Crystal Palace's centre-forwards have reached double digits in goals this Premier League season.
Glenn Murray went from being unable to cut it at Premier League level to Crystal Palace's top scorer (six goals) within two months.
Crystal Palace need a more reliable outlet.
Claudio Beauvue can play across midfield, but he is an underrated No. 9 and can cause damage from that position.
He has found the back of the net against top teams such as Lyon and Fiorentina this campaign.
At one point this season, he went on a five-game scoring run.
10. West Ham United
11 of 20Suggested Signing: Serbian central midfielder Nemanja Gudelj, 23, AZ.
If West Ham United don't extend Alex Song's loan into a permanent deal, Nemanja Gudelj should be a viable alternative.
Song is a top talent, having starred for Arsenal and is on the books of Barcelona, though his lack of production might be tied to his lax attitude.
He lacks the competitiveness, determination and insatiable drive of Gudelj, who plays every match as if it is a cup final.
A tough-minded and super-fit box-to-box midfielder, Gudelj is perfect for the Premier League.
His goals from midfield (12 in all competitions this season) would be a big bonus, which may trigger bigger clubs than West Ham United to vie for his signature.
9. Stoke City
12 of 20Suggested Signing: Austrian central midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic, 27, Werder Bremen.
Given that Werder Bremen have failed to hold onto Davie Selke, a centre-forward with elite upside, you wonder if Zlatko Junuzovic's curiosity will be sparked if he is presented with Premier League money.
Junuzovic has reached double digits in assists in the Bundesliga this season.
A genius on the ball, Junuzovic could be to Stoke City what Tugay Kerimoglu was to Blackburn Rovers.
8. Swansea City
13 of 20Suggested Signing: Brazilian centre-forward Leo Baptistao, 22, Atletico Madrid.
This would be a high-risk, high-reward transfer.
Leo Baptistao looks like a broken man, which is disappointing because he was one of the most exciting talents in La Liga when he signed for Atletico Madrid.
Inconsistent playing time and injuries have created doubt, which explains Leo drifting through games.
On loan at Rayo Vallecano, Leo has scored seven goals in 23 La Liga games this season. He is currently rehabilitating from a groin strain.
To think Leo and Neymar use to play on the same junior team.
Swansea City may want a more surefire No. 9, but if they are a drawing a blank, giving Leo a chance at redemption would be a compelling gamble.
7. Southampton
14 of 20Suggested Signing: German centre-forward Mark Uth, 23, Heerenveen.
Southampton need an alternative to Graziano Pelle, who is struggling in the Premier League as if he is playing in Serie A again.
He looked like an elite No. 9 during the first two months of the season but has since fallen away, scoring just one Premier League goal in 2015.
Uth has gone from being Lukas Podolski's understudy to one of the top centre-forwards in the Eredivisie.
What you like about Uth is he scores like a No. 9 but can set up teammates like a No. 10.
Uth's 14 goals and 10 assists in 30 Eredivisie games are not Afonso Alves-like numbers.
However, Ruud van Nistelrooy was not statistically dominant at Heerenveen and went on to become a scoring machine, so there is a possibility Uth could become more prolific if he continues to develop.
6. Tottenham Hotspur
15 of 20Suggested Signing: Colombian centre-forward Duvan Zapata, 24, Napoli.
Tottenham Hotspur have no legitimate backup centre-forward if Harry Kane is out for an extended period of time.
Emmanuel Adebayor is unreliable and Roberto Soldado is the Tottenham Hotspur Fernando Torres: nice guy, likeable, works hard but a big-time bust.
Duvan Zapata is explosive, dynamic and an impact player whenever you watch him.
At first glance, his six goals from 18 Serie A games is not an impressive statistic.
But if you delve deeper, a more accurate picture is painted. He has scored five goals and provided two assists in nine starts, so he is capable of turning it on when given a chance.
5. Liverpool
16 of 20Suggested Signing: German central midfielder Johannes Geis, 21, Mainz.
Johannes Geis passes like a gunslinger.
Despite possessing first-rate technique and having a smooth kicking motion, Geis tends to give the ball right back to the opposition.
He is 26.5 per cent likely to relinquish the ball whenever he passes, which is too high for a midfielder who averages 56.4 passes per 90 minutes.
Yet when you watch Geis, you see a midfielder with world-class potential.
He can function as a deep-lying playmaker, he has the energy to play as a box-to-box midfielder and the vision to be a No. 10.
Liverpool generally take on projects, so Geis is a prospect they should consider.
He is currently placed at No. 60 in Kicker's Bundesliga player rankings.
4. Manchester City
17 of 20Suggested Signing: Brazilian central midfielder Allan Marques, 24, Udinese.
Manchester City should thank Yaya Toure for his services and part ways with the Ivorian.
Udinese midfielder Allan Marques is dedicated, a strong tackler, works hard without the ball and dominant—essentially the antithesis of Toure.
You cannot play Toure as a central midfielder because he is a defensive liability, having committed more fouls (30) than tackles (27) this season.
Allan has accumulated 111 more tackles than Toure this campaign, which is an indictment on how lazy the Manchester City midfielder has been.
3. Manchester United
18 of 20Suggested Signing: Dutch central midfielder Davy Klaassen, 22, Ajax.
Manchester United need a footballer who can command midfield, be gritty when winning back the ball and be productive in the attacking half.
You presume Klaassen fits what Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal looks for in a footballer:
- Dutch.
- High upside.
- Can score and create: six goals and nine assists in 29 Eredivisie games.
- Able to defend: 3.0 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per 90 minutes.
- Can dictate play: 52.1 passes per 90 minutes.
2. Arsenal
19 of 20Suggested Signing: Dutch right-forward Anwar El Ghazi, 19, Ajax.
Theo Walcott has started 57.1 per cent of 21 Premier League games in the last two seasons.
If he wants to prolong what has been a meandering career, he should stay at Arsenal.
However, if he wants to maximise his potential and become a 15-20-goal-per-season centre-forward, he needs to seek greener pastures.
Anwar El Ghazi combines superlative physical attributes with outstanding technique.
At just 19 years of age, he already has scored and created a combined 17 goals in the Eredivisie this season.
1. Chelsea
20 of 20Suggested Signing: Swiss goalkeeper Roman Burki, 24, Freiburg.
Chelsea backup goalkeeper Petr Cech has no intention of being like Carlo Cudicini.
If Cech elects to force a transfer away from Stamford Bridge, Chelsea need to sign an up-and-coming goalkeeper who can push Thibaut Courtois.
Roman Burki has been so phenomenal this season that you wonder if he is on an Oliver Kahn-like trajectory.
Kahn grafted at Karlsruher before he hit the big time by signing for Bayern Munich.
Leading the Bundesliga in saves (130), Burki is statistically dominant and rated highly from a subjective perspective.
He is placed at No. 2 in Kicker's Bundesliga player rankings for goalkeepers only.
