Stock Up, Stock Down for Mets Top 10 Prospects for Week 2

Shale BriskinApr 16, 2015

The New York Mets are off to a 6-3 start this season and are currently tied for the NL East lead. After struggling a bit against the Atlanta Braves, they played very well against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Down on the farm, the Mets' minor league affiliates got their seasons started as well.

Here are stock updates for the Mets' top 10 prospects at the start of the season.

10. Gavin Cecchini, SS, Binghamton Mets (Double-A)

1 of 10

2015 Season Statistics:

7 G, .318/.400/.591, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R

Last Week's Statistics:

7 G, .318/.400/.591, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R

Overview:

After hitting just .247 last year with eight home runs and 56 RBI, this is certainly a nice start for Gavin Cecchini's season in his first year of Double-A ball. How long this type of production lasts is unknown, but with the shortstop problems the Mets have had in recent years, it's nice to see a prospect like this at the minor league level.

Look for Cecchini to develop more as a hitter and try to make his mark as the Mets' potential shortstop of the future.

9. Dominic Smith, 1B, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

2 of 10

2015 Statistics:

7 G, .111/.172/.148, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 2 R

Last Week's Statistics:

7 G, .111/.172/.148, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 2 R

Overview:

After a disappointing 2014 season from a power perspective (just one home run all season), Dominic Smith is off to a poor start to his 2015 campaign. He has just three hits in 27 at-bats and his stock is clearly falling right now. Hopefully, Smith will find his power stroke again and put together a better season this year.

8. Marcos Molina, RHP, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

3 of 10

2015 Statistics:

1 GS, 0-0, 3.00 ERA, 1 BB, 6 K, 6.0 IP

Last Week's Statistics:

1 GS, 0-0, 3.00 ERA, 1 BB, 6 K, 6.0 IP

Overview:

Marcos Molina had a breakout season with Single-A Brooklyn in 2014 with a 7-3 record and a 1.77 ERA. In his first start of the 2015 season, he allowed two earned runs in six innings pitched. He allowed five hits and one walk to go along with six strikeouts.

The core of the Mets' young pitching is now a lot more developed, but they still have a good prospect in Molina at the lower levels.

7. Amed Rosario, SS, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

4 of 10

2015 Statistics:

6 G, .280/.280/.400, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 5 R

Last Week's Statistics:

6 G, .280/.280/.400, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 5 R

Overview:

Yet another top prospect on the St. Lucie Mets is shortstop Amed Rosario. Rosario is off to a decent start thus far with seven hits in his first 25 at-bats. He is coming off a 2014 season that featured a .274 average and 41 runs scored. Rosario is just 19 years old, so he's still a long way from the major leagues, but if he has a big season this year, it would certainly help him move up the system that much quicker.

6. Dilson Herrera, 2B, Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A)

5 of 10

2015 Statistics:

6 G, .227/.280/.227, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 4 R

Last Week's Statistics:

6 G, .227/.280/.227, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 4 R

Overview:

Dilson Herrera had a breakout season last year between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Las Vegas. Across both levels combined, he hit .323 with 13 home runs and 71 RBI. He was then rewarded with a major league call-up late in the season and hit .220 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 59 at-bats.

The 21-year-old Herrera is almost ready for a call-up, but he is currently blocked by Daniel Murphy at second base. It will be interesting to see whether the Mets decide to keep Murphy around for a while or if they see Herrera as a big part of their future.

5. Michael Conforto, LF, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

6 of 10

2015 Statistics:

7 G, .292/.433/.583, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 R

Last Week's Statistics:

7 G, .292/.433/.583, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 R

Overview:

Playing in his first full minor league season, the Mets' first-round pick in 2014 is off to a good start. Michael Conforto has already hit a pair of home runs and driven in eight runs. He has also drawn six walks, which has certainly had an effect on his on-base percentage.

In 163 at-bats last year at Single-A Brooklyn, Conforto was raking at the plate with a .331 average, three home runs and 19 RBI. With the start he is off to this year, Conforto should instantly turn into one of the Mets' most exciting offensive prospects.

4. Brandon Nimmo, CF, Binghamton Mets (Double-A)

7 of 10

2015 Statistics:

7 G, .192/.267/.423, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R

Last Week's Statistics:

7 G, .192/.267/.423, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R

Overview:

Brandon Nimmo put together his best season yet last year with a .278 average, 10 home runs and 51 RBI. Following that up, Nimmo has only gotten five hits in 26 at-bats so far, but his slow start is highlighted by two home runs early in the season. Nimmo is more of a contact hitter than a true power threat, but it's nice to see the power early on.

3. Steven Matz, LHP, Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A)

8 of 10

2015 Statistics:

2 GS, 0-1, 3.48 ERA, 8 BB, 9 K, 10.1 IP

Last Week's Statistics:

2 GS, 0-1, 3.48 ERA, 8 BB, 9 K, 10.1 IP

Overview:

Steven Matz had a great season in 2014 with a 10-9 record and a 2.24 ERA in 24 starts. Matz has had a pair of good starts so far this year. In his first, he went five full innings and allowed one earned run, three hits and three walks. He struck out four batters. In his second, he pitched 5.1 innings and allowed three earned runs, five hits and five walks, to go along with five strikeouts.

The walks are clearly a bit of a concern, but hopefully, Matz will pitch better with time and limit the walks. He allowed just 35 walks all season last year, which means that he has already shown that he can be good with his control. Let's hope this is just a small bump in the road for Matz, who could get promoted to the Mets later this year.

2. Kevin Plawecki, C, Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A)

9 of 10

2015 Statistics:

5 G, .095/.136/.190, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 R

Last Week's Statistics:

5 G, .095/.136/.190, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 R

Overview:

After a big 2014 season that included a .309 average, 11 home runs and 64 RBI, Kevin Plawecki is off to a poor start to his 2015 season. The lumbering catcher has only two hits in 21 at-bats. Hopefully, this is just a slow start to the season and it doesn't end up raising any red flags if his slump continues in the coming weeks.

With Travis d'Arnaud as the Mets' starting catcher, Plawecki is pretty much blocked right now. However, in the right deal, Plawecki could be moved for a major league upgrade of some sort. With Lucas Duda now entrenched at first base, he probably doesn't have a future with the Mets there either. But it will be interesting to see what ends up happening to Plawecki this year.

1. Noah Syndergaard, RHP, Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A)

10 of 10

2015 Statistics:

1 GS, 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 4.0 IP

Last Week's Statistics:

1 GS, 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 4.0 IP

Overview:

Noah Syndergaard enters the 2015 season as the Mets' top prospect once again. It's likely he will make his major league debut sometime this season, and hopefully, he will pitch well enough in the minor leagues to carry that momentum into the majors.

In his first start this season, Syndergaard allowed two earned runs, seven hits and one walk in four innings pitched. He struck out two batters and came away with a no-decision. It's possible that the Mets may be limiting Syndergaard's minor league innings early on so that if and when he gets promoted to the majors, he will be able to throw more innings and potentially help the team more.

Again, nothing is set in stone about Syndergaard's eventual major league promotion, but it should be an exciting moment for the Mets and their fans when it happens.
