UFC Fight Night 64 Results: The Real Winners & Losers

Riley KontekApr 11, 2015

The UFC made its first trip to Poland ever, as UFC Fight Night 64 took place Saturday morning and afternoon. Live on Fight Pass, the bout was headlined by a heavyweight scrap between Mirko Cro Cop and Gabriel Gonzaga.

The fight was heavy on local talent, as a lot of big names did not grace the card. Fans were able to get an insight on some of Europe's prospects and some young fighters that have a chance to be UFC staples in the future.

We had winners and losers in every fight. However, who were the real winners and losers from this event?

Let's examine that now.

Winner: Aleksandra Albu

1 of 7

There were a lot of questions heading into UFC Fight Night 64 about unknown Aleksandra Albu, but she answered them in a two-round domination of Izabela Badurek.

Albu, a bodybuilder and striker, showed great physical strength, balance and precision striking throughout her bout with Badurek. That balance led to victory, as Badurek went for one of her many takedown attempts only to get caught in a brutal guillotine choke by Albu.

She was really never in trouble against Badurek, which showed the type of performance she put on against a more experienced fighter who was in her home country.

Certainly, we should not jump the gun, as the 115-pound division is a shark tank, but Albu showed that she is actually skilled and can be competitive. A slow build-up and more experience could make Albu a star in this division down the road.

Loser: Polish Fighters

2 of 7

It was not a good night for the Polish fighters on the card. They struggled to get in the win column, which had to be disconcerting to the fans in attendance.

Polish fighters went 2-5 on the card, 2-6 if you count American transplant Seth Baczynski. The only two Poles who came out smelling fresh were Bartosz Fabinski and Pawel Pawlak. The rest of the Poles on the card were lackluster, overmatched or generally struggled.

Although the fighters on this card don't represent the amount of talent Poland actually has, they definitely came out of this card as losers.

Winner: Leon Edwards

3 of 7

Dude has charisma, is violent and woke up a sleeping preliminary card crowd. There is no way Leon Edwards was anything but a winner.

Edwards needed just eight seconds and less than a dozen punches to finish Seth Baczynski in the final prelim of the night. The finish electrified the crowd, which had been lulled to sleep by lackluster prelims throughout the card.

After the fight, he made the most of his mic time with Dan Hardy. He showed personality and charm, which in unison can make him marketable. If he can continue performances like the one he had in Poland, Edwards will be a guy to keep an eye on in the welterweight division.

Loser: UFC/Polish Fans

4 of 7

Poland is a huge market for MMA. If you don't believe me, watch a KSW card in which some of the country's best dazzle packed crowds in a Pride-like environment.

What the UFC presented to the Polish masses wasn't even competitive with a KSW card. From the talent to the presentation, the UFC failed Poland in its first trip to the MMA-crazy country.

The UFC didn't even attempt to bring in some of the best fighters the country has to offer. I am sure there are circumstances as to why the UFC couldn't get certain guys, but some of the fighters on the card showed they weren't ready for this level.

Not only that, but the card was critically panned. Low talent level and lackluster fights teamed up to kill the vibe on this card.

This may be the night the UFC lost to a regional promotion without direct competition. KSW can sleep well at night, knowing the UFC can't hurt its business in Poland.

Winner: Maryna Moroz

5 of 7

Nobody gave her a chance. She was an afterthought and was supposed to be a steppingstone for Joanne Calderwood.

Maryna Moroz certainly didn't get that message.

A heavy underdog, she needed just 90 seconds to dispose of Calderwood, to the shock of all who watched. She stood in the pocket with Calderwood and exchanged, eventually got the fight down and ended things quickly with a textbook armbar.

After the fight, she exchanged words with champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, as well as called her out on the mic afterward. That's the type of thing that fighters need to do to jump into the champion's mind, and Moroz may have put her name into title talks with a quick thrashing of a top contender.

Loser: Joanne Calderwood

6 of 7

All she had to do was win, and she would be fighting for the title. Not only did she lose, but Joanne Calderwood put in the worst performance of her career.

She looked shaky on the feet, where she was supposed to have the advantage. Maryna Moroz willingly exchanged with her, and the Scottish fighter was not able to take advantage.

Then it happened.

The fight hit the ground, Moroz slapped on an armbar, and the title shot was gone. Calderwood may have been the biggest loser of the night in that regard, just because a title shot went through her fingers.

Winner: Mirko Cro Cop

7 of 7

For two rounds, it looked like Mirko Cro Cop's return to the UFC was yet another lackluster one. He was being tentative, and Gabriel Gonzaga was outgunning him.

Elbows from the clinch changed all of that in a hurry.

Cro Cop's TKO finish of Gonzaga had fans in a frenzy, as he plastered Gonzaga with huge ground-and-pound after hurting him with standing elbow strikes. It was a huge victory that saved Cro Cop from yet another UFC loss.

He comes out of this fight looking great, earning his first UFC victory in a long time. Sure, his best times are behind him, but that finish was a good ending to a terrible card.
