NBPA Investigating Circumstances Surrounding Thabo Sefolosha, Pero Antic Arrests
In the wake of Atlanta Hawks forward Thabo Sefolosha breaking his leg while being arrested outside a Manhattan, New York, nightclub Wednesday, the National Basketball Players Association is searching for answers.
According to ESPN.com, Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland was stabbed, and both Sefolosha and Hawks teammate Pero Antic were later arrested for interfering with the police's efforts to set up a crime scene.
That resulted in Sefolosha suffering a season-ending injury, per SportsCenter:
With the circumstances surrounding the events remaining murky, spokeswoman Tara Greco revealed that the NBPA is launching an investigation, according to ESPN.com's Kevin Arnovitz:
"The players' union is concerned about the circumstances of Thabo Sefolosha and Pero Antic's arrest and is doing its own investigation of the situation. The union was fully engaged in supporting all three players in court and in the precinct this week, and will continue to stay engaged as each situation evolves.
"
The arresting officers have come under scrutiny after TMZ released a video showing several of them converging on Sefolosha (warning: video contains profanity):
The 30-year-old Swiss star won't play another game for the Eastern Conference-leading Hawks this season, and that could certainly hurt their pursuit of an NBA championship due to the defense and depth that he added to the roster.
It is difficult to get a handle on the situation involving Sefolosha, Antic and Copeland since there are so many moving parts, but the NBPA seemingly intends to make the picture a bit clearer.
Sefolosha and Antic are due in court June 18, per Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Regardless of what findings ultimately come to light, though, the Hawks will still be without one of their key bench players.
