Masters Leaderboard 2015: Updates on Golf's Top Scorers on Friday

Nate LoopApr 10, 2015

Few golfers are capable of strolling into a major and making it look like it's their own personal course. In Round 1 of the 2015 Masters, golf phenom Jordan Spieth did exactly that.

The 21-year-old was simply too good to be ignored on Thursday, starting off the tournament with an eight-under 64. He and even had a chance to become the first player to shoot a 62 at a major, per USA Today's Steve DiMeglio, before stumbling ever so slightly late in the round.

His golf game also seemed too good to be true at times. His brilliant shots were underscored by a couple of lucky ones, most notably a sliced shot on Amen Corner that hit a tree, only to bounce back into the fairway and set him up for an easy look at the green.

"He's a special kid," said PGA veteran Ernie Els, per DiMeglio. Els finished tied for second after Thursday at five under par.

With the early goings showing that this is clearly Spieth's tournament to lose, here's a look at the live leaderboard from Friday.

Notable Early Friday Results

Midway through Friday's play, it was quite clear this was still Spieth's tournament, and everyone else was just looking for a way to somehow emulate the golfing mastery on display at Augusta.

CBS Sports' Kyle Porter noted Spieth's first nine holes on Friday were every bit as good as his front and back nines on Thursday:

Seung-Yul Noh came into this tournament on a string of bad results, finishing tied for 50th at the Valero Texas Open on March 26 and missing the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Honda Classic prior to that poor result.

He seemed to have broken free of his bad run of form in this tournament, shooting an opening-round 70 on Thursday.

Noh managed to bring his score down to three under at one point on Friday, but a double bogey on the 16th hole and a bogey on the 17th proved ruinous for his scoreline. He finished at par for the tournament on Friday with a second-round total of 74.

Erik Compton and Cameron Tringale had early tee times on Friday, but neither golfer was ever in line to threaten any of the top players at Augusta over the course of the first two rounds.

Compton shot a 73 in Round 1 and was unable to improve upon that score in Round 2, shooting a 72 to stand pat and stay mixed in with the stragglers. Tringale's second round was even more disappointing, as he squandered his opening-round score of 71 by finishing two over for the tournament after 18 holes on Friday.

It's been a tournament to forget thus far for Ben Martin, who finished four over after two poor rounds of play that left him near the back of the pack at Augusta.

After a trying Round 1 that saw him finish one over, Tiger Woods managed to get off to an encouraging start on Friday with a birdie on his first hole, per the Masters Tournament:

Woods knows better than most golfers what it's like to blow away the field at Augusta, having won the tournament four times in his career, including his brilliant 18-under performance in 1997. While it was encouraging to see him play in this tournament at all after a long injury layoff, it's clear that he's not yet capable of challenging for top prizes at this point.

His strong form may return to him at some point, but for now the sport of golf belongs to young guns like Spieth and 25-year-old Rory McIlroy, among others.
