Antonio Smith to Broncos: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappApr 2, 2015

The Denver Broncos were able to upgrade their defensive line pretty late in free agency, signing former Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Antonio Smith.

NFL agent Drew Rosenhaus (via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com) provided the news Thursday:

Smith, 33, was released by the Raiders amid a rash of veteran cuts that cleaned out several of general manager Reggie McKenzie's free-agent signings from a year ago, including linebacker Lamarr Woodley and quarterback Matt Schaub, among others.

He finished the 2014 season with just 20 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble and generally didn't fare well in the run game, though he was able to generate a pass rush.

He's played for the Arizona Cardinals, the Houston Texans and the Raiders in his career and was most effective in Houston, where he accumulated 27 sacks and seven forced fumbles in five seasons with the team. The Broncos will certainly be hoping he can regain that form for them this season and help to bolster the team's defensive line as they make another push for the Super Bowl.
