Chiefs Draft Stock Watch: 5 Players Rising and Falling on Kansas City's Board
The Kansas City Chiefs have had an impressive offseason so far. General manager John Dorsey tackled the wide receiver and offensive line positions, areas where the team needed desperate improvement.
By recruiting wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and offensive linemen Ben Grubbs and Paul Fanaika, the Chiefs addressed their two biggest needs. In addition, they added safety Tyvon Branch while re-signing wide receiver Jason Avant, tight end Richard Gordon and defensive backs Kelcie McCray and Ron Parker.
Because of Kansas City's strong performance in free agency, Dorsey and his staff have the ability to be flexible in the draft, and owning 10 draft picks allows the team to be even more flexible on draft week.
In this slideshow, we go over five players and determine their stock with the Chiefs.
Stock Up: Cameron Erving, Center, Florida State
1 of 5
With the departure of Rodney Hudson to the Oakland Raiders, the Chiefs have just two options at center: Stefen Wisniewski, who was replaced by Hudson in Oakland, or Cameron Erving, who is likely the top prospect at the position in this year's draft class.
Kansas City added some muscle at the offensive line by snagging Grubbs and Fanaika, who allowed one sack apiece in 2014, according to Pro Football Focus.
If the Chiefs take Erving in the first or second round, quarterback Alex Smith would have a strong interior offensive line with tackles who have potential.
Smith lacked help from his wide receivers and offensive line last year. Now, he will be getting help and have less excuses.
Stock Down: Dorial Green-Beckham, Wide Receiver, Missouri/Oklahoma
2 of 5
Dorial Green-Beckham's stock is down for a couple of reasons in regard to Kansas City.
First, the addition of Jeremy Maclin helps the offensive immensely. With tight end Travis Kelce leading the Chiefs in catches, receiving yards and touchdown grabs last year, the offense adds another threat as defenses must pick their poison between Maclin and Kelce.
In addition, head coach Andy Reid likes to use his running backs in the passing game. The Chiefs have three scatbacks in Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis and De'Anthony Thomas who can catch and use their breakaway speed to earn some yards after the catch.
Another reason Green-Beckham's draft stock is down for the Chiefs is because of the style of Kansas City's offense. Smith does not generally use wide receivers much compared to tight ends and running backs.
At the same time, an NFL team can never have enough receivers, and Reid may find a way to have Smith be active with Green-Beckham along with the rest of the pass-catchers on the team.
While his draft stock has decreased, it has not gone down by much. The No. 2 receiver spot is an important position in the NFL, and Green-Beckham would still be a great No. 2 receiver for Kansas City.
The biggest reason why his draft stock is down is because the Chiefs already addressed this spot and may seek a receiver in a later round.
Stock Up: Quinten Rollins, Cornerback, Miami (Ohio)
3 of 5
The Chiefs have a solid and underrated cornerback in Sean Smith, while Phillip Gaines had a good rookie campaign last year. But with teams going pass-heavy, the Chiefs could benefit from drafting a cornerback.
Quinten Rollins would be a nice addition to the defensive backs. In addition to going up against Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers twice, the Chiefs will face Ben Roethlisberger, Matthew Stafford, Andy Dalton, Joe Flacco and Aaron Rodgers throughout the season.
There's a strong possibility Rollins is available at No. 18 when the Chiefs select and maybe at No. 49 overall in the second round.
Stock Down: Landon Collins, Safety, Alabama
4 of 5
At one point, the Chiefs were projected to take Landon Collins in the draft. While taking Collins at No. 18 would be a nice upgrade at safety, it is not an area of importance for the Chiefs.
With Branch, Parker and Husain Abdullah on the team, the Chiefs have a solid group of safeties. If Eric Berry is cleared to play, the Chiefs will have even more power.
For now, Kansas City has other areas it must focus on to improve its football team for 2015.
Stock Up: Sammie Coates, Wide Receiver, Auburn
5 of 5
Amari Cooper, Kevin White, DeVante Parker, Jaelen Strong and Green-Beckham are touted as the top wide receiver prospects and are all likely to be taken in the first round, but Sammie Coates is right behind them.
Coates may slip into the second round and could be on the board when the Chiefs are on the clock with the 49th pick. If Kansas City focuses on another area in the first round, it can come back to considering a receiver in the second round, and it would be a good idea to draft Coates to play opposite of Maclin.
Coates is a physical receiver who would be a good fit for Reid's offense and flourish under the coach's guidance.
