Trevon Diggs to Alabama: Crimson Tide Land 4-Star ATH Prospect

Matt FitzgeraldNov 7, 2015

Trevon Diggs, a 4-star athlete from The Avalon School in Rockville, Maryland, announced Saturday he will play college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide, according to Hank South of 247Sports.

He chose the Crimson Tide over favored Maryland, West Virginia, LSU and Clemson, announcing his decision following his game Saturday.

Home-state Maryland was thought to be the favorite when interim coach Mike Locksley took over, per Josh Stirn of 247Sports, as he recruited Diggs' brother, Stefon, who is having a breakout NFL rookie season with the Minnesota Vikings.

Diggs already has a decently developed frame at 6'0" and 183 pounds. While he has shown the ability to excel as a wide receiver, he can also play defensive back if called upon at the college level.

The composite rankings at 247Sports have him as the sixth-best athlete in the country and the No. 108 overall prospect in the Class of 2016. If Diggs had a clear-cut college position, his latter rank might be even higher.

As a junior in 2014, he hauled in 78 receptions for 1,008 yards and 15 touchdowns. He shows strong hands, a knack for fighting for the ball and exudes a high football IQ with his precocious route-running savvy.

Although he appears to lack elite top-end speed, it's no surprise that he is capable of making big plays both ways the further downfield the ball is thrown.

Locating the football, recovery and closing speed are all strengths Diggs shows as a cornerback. He is a bit of a long strider, but he is elusive in the open field and can create something out of nothing in space.

With a bit more refinement on his technique, perhaps he can generate a bit more explosiveness in terms of lateral quickness and pure acceleration. Both are areas he'll need to hone in on whether he plays receiver or in the secondary.

It may take a bit of time for Diggs to see the field on a full-time starting basis, depending on where Alabama coach Nick Saban decides to ultimately place him. Once he gets settled at the college level, though, he ought to develop into a productive player and a dependable starter.
