Wade Barrett and Dean Ambrose's Feud Must Continue to WrestleMania 31

Sebastian MaldonadoFeb 20, 2015

Dean Ambrose and Wade Barrett are the two hottest commodities in the WWE’s midcard division. Why not slate a feud between these two?

The WWE must have thought of this idea after the Royal Rumble. The February 2 edition of Raw featured Ambrose making short work of Curtis Axel. Then, Ambrose cut a heartfelt promo on wanting to take the Intercontinental Championship.

Barrett, the current champion, said no. He felt Ambrose wasn’t ready and stated how challenges shouldn’t be made to a champion of his caliber.

Ambrose wouldn’t let up on his promise. The February 16 episode of Raw featured Barrett in a match with Damien Mizdow. Barrett won with the Bull Hammer, but what happened next was a sign of perseverance.

The Lunatic Fringe ambushed Barrett and shoved him into the ring post shoulder first. He then zip-tied Barrett to the post.

He slowly made his way to Barrett with a pen and contract for a match at Fastlane. He forced Barrett to sign on the dotted line, and now these two will do battle on Sunday for the Intercontinental Championship.

Ambrose didn’t get what he wanted at first, but by being persistent, he got his title shot.

It seems this might be a one-and-done, however. Barrett hasn’t done much with the title, and Ambrose has the hot hand. He needs the title more than Barrett in establishing the title’s importance, something it hasn’t had for far too long.

WWE Creative would be making a mistake by just having one match between these two. They need to stretch the feud out and have it culminate down the line.

In other words, Barrett’s feud with Ambrose must continue toward WrestleMania 31.

It works for all parties involved: Ambrose, Barrett and the title.

Ambrose really stepped up for the WWE in a big way. He was involved in a sensational feud with Seth Rollins from July to October of last year. Ambrose then moved on to face Bray Wyatt in November and December.

Ambrose was the main event in both Hell In A Cell and TLC against Rollins and Wyatt, respectively.

Despite losing both encounters, Ambrose never lost momentum. He needs a feud from which he comes out victorious for the fans. Who doesn’t want to see Ambrose become the champion?

Barrett needs this as well. He’s already a five-time intercontinental champion and his “Bad News” gimmick has done well in front of the WWE’s audience.

The champion has also returned from a separated shoulder with a mission. Why not give Barrett a newfound purpose going into WrestleMania?

The intercontinental title benefits most from this. It has floundered in mediocrity for years. Gone are the glory days when Ricky Steamboat and Randy Savage waged wars for the title.

In fact, the intercontinental title has been featured in a pay-per-view main event just once in its history. Back in 1992, the British Bulldog defeated Bret Hart at SummerSlam at Wembley Stadium. Where is the prestige now?

It still takes a backseat to non-title matches despite the sporadic appearances by WWE champion Brock Lesnar.

Frankly, the intercontinental title needs to be appreciated more by the WWE. It can start with these two men right now.

Both Barrett and Ambrose generate reactions from the crowd. Therefore, they can make fans care about the title. Isn’t that what it’s all about: Getting the crowd interested in your titles?

Barrett and Ambrose’s feud must continue at WrestleMania 31. If WWE chooses to end it at Fastlane, it would represent bad news for the beloved Intercontinental Championship.
