Tayshaun Prince to Pistons: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction
Forward Tayshaun Prince made the most of his brief time with the Boston Celtics, but he found himself traded for the second time this season when the team shipped him to the Detroit Pistons, the team that drafted him in 2002.
The Pistons made an official announcement via Twitter.
Marc Stein of ESPN first reported on the Celtics' deadline deal. SportsCenter reported that the Celtics received Jonas Jerebko and Gigi Datome in return.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported before Thursday's NBA trade deadline that Prince would have been bought out in the event that Boston couldn't send him elsewhere.
Instead of the latter scenario, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge managed to get compensation in return for the 34-year-old veteran, even with his contract expiring after the 2014-15 campaign. Boston had won four of its last five games with Prince, who played nine games total for the Celtics.
David Mayo of MLive.com weighed in on Prince's return:
Prince is an experienced player who's won a championship with the organization, so Stan Van Gundy has to be excited to welcome him into the fold.
Although it's been apparent that Prince has declined in recent years, his brief stint in Beantown showed he can still play at a high level. Prince averaged just 22 minutes per contest, yet he made the most of them, with efficient shooting and an average of 8.4 points.
A career-long starter, Prince has proved he can take on more of a supporting role off of the bench. Despite retaining starter status in Memphis last season, he saw his minutes dwindle south of 30 for the first time since his rookie year.
Detroit will likely deploy Prince as a prominent bench contributor, depending on how he meshes with the current personnel. Length on the wing, competent outside shooting and defense should allow Prince to thrive in his latest NBA home, which is a deviation from his long tenure of success during his first stint with the Pistons.
