Broncos Exploring Extension for Osweiler
Friday, Feb. 13
As he enters the final season of his rookie contract, Osweiler seems to be emerging as a priority for the Broncos. In the following video, Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reveals that Denver is hoping to extend the promising signal-caller, although contract talks have yet to begin:
Osweiler was the Broncos' second-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft. It is difficult to say where he is in terms of development as he has attempted just 30 regular-season passes. At the same time, he seemingly has all the tools needed to be an excellent NFL quarterback.
At 6'8" with a rocket arm, the former Arizona State standout could potentially be a superstar in waiting.
Despite his lack of experience, Osweiler's teammates seem to have a great deal of confidence in him. According to Mike Wilkening of Pro Football Talk, cornerback Chris Harris recently compared Osweiler to Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Flacco.
"He's kind of like a young Joe Flacco," Harris said. "He has that arm. I think him and (Broncos head coach Gary) Kubiak, I think they’re going to fit perfect together. With the way he ran the offense with the Ravens with Joe Flacco, I see Brock as a similar quarterback."
That is certainly high praise, and there is no doubt that the Broncos must find a way to lock up the 24-year-old quarterback if he truly has a Flacco-esque ceiling.
Manning will be the guy in Denver for as long as he wants to play, but he can't continue to take the field forever, so the Broncos must do everything possible to have a contingency plan in place.
