Dan Quinn to Falcons: Key Takeaways, Comments from Introductory Press Conference

Mike ChiariFeb 3, 2015

The Atlanta Falcons had to wait longer than anyone else to hire a head coach, but they made it clear Tuesday that they felt former Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was worth it as he was officially introduced in a press conference.

Atlanta could not hire Quinn until the Seahawks' season reached its conclusion, but it was able to finalize the deal less than 24 hours after Seattle fell to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX, according to the Falcons' official Twitter account:

Falcons owner Arthur Blank ecstatically introduced Quinn and preached that patience paid off as the organization was willing to wait for its preferred choice:

Blank also hammered home the fact that Quinn will have a major impact on what the Falcons' roster looks like at the start of the 2015 NFL season, according to NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano:

Almost immediately after taking the podium, Quinn made it clear that his intention is to strive for a title, just like he did with the Seahawks, per Fox 5 Sports:

The Seahawks were largely successful during Quinn's run as defensive coordinator due to their attention to detail and ability to make the simple plays.

They were among the surest-tackling teams in the NFL, and Quinn wants to bring that same type of mentality to Atlanta:

There is no question that jumping from Seattle to Atlanta is a massive change for Quinn in terms of defensive talent. The Falcons were among the worst defensive teams in the NFL in 2014, especially when it came to pressuring the quarterback, according to ESPN Stats & Info:

Despite the fact that Quinn has a big job ahead of him, he confirmed Tuesday that Atlanta was his preferred landing spot, per Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com:

Quinn talked about his relationship with Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff, according to Albert Breer of NFL.com:

Quinn also used much of his time at the podium to discuss the formation of his coaching staff. He announced a couple key hires on the defensive side of the ball, including former Denver Broncos linebackers coach Richard Smith:

Quinn also noted that Keith Armstrong would remain as the Atlanta's special teams coordinator, according to the Falcons' official Twitter feed:

While Smith could ultimately prove to be the defensive coordinator in name only, Quinn has yet to decide who will be calling the plays:

There is no such mystery on offense with Kyle Shanahan taking charge of the talented unit featuring Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and Roddy White:

The 44-year-old Quinn comes to Atlanta after two years at the helm of one of the most dominant defenses in NFL history. The Seahawks were one play short of being repeat Super Bowl champions, and Quinn certainly radiated a winning attitude during his introductory press conference.

Quinn was impressive to say the least, and he received rave reviews from many for his enthusiasm and the vision he laid out Tuesday.

NFL.com's Trevor Wong felt the same vibes watching Quinn that he does when watching Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll:

Breer noted that one Seahawks player's description of his former coach's skill set:

Even Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan's wife, Sarah, is excited about the start of Quinn's tenure in Atlanta:

The Falcons fell just one game short of the playoffs in 2014, and there is no question that they have enough talent on offense to vie for the NFC South crown.

Most of the question marks reside on the defensive side of the ball, which is why Quinn may very well turn out to be the ideal hire for Atlanta.
