Patriots vs. Seahawks: Final Results, Player Reaction and Stats from Super Bowl

Joseph ZuckerFeb 2, 2015

For the fourth time in their respective careers and first time since 2005, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are Super Bowl champions.

The New England Patriots toppled the reigning-champion Seattle Seahawks, 28-24, in Super Bowl XLIX to reclaim their throne as the best team in the NFL. Julian Edelman scored the go-ahead touchdown with two minutes and two seconds left in the game, and a shocking goal-line stand by the Patriots helped secure the victory.

It was arguably the most impressive of the franchise's four Super Bowl wins, coming 13 years after the first.

Player Reaction

One of the most talked-about moments from the game was Pete Carroll's decision to pass the ball on second down at the Patriots 1-yard line rather than run it with Marshawn Lynch. Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson's pass to end the Seahawks' comeback attempt.

After the game, Wilson refused to point any fingers, per Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times:

Lynch remained diplomatic as well and didn't question why Carroll chose not to give him the ball in a goal-line situation, per ESPN.com's Jim Trotter:

Although the disappointment from this loss will linger from some time, the Seahawks could realistically make a third Super Bowl in a row. The players will undoubtedly use the sting from Sunday night as motivation heading into the 2015 season.

Both Wilson and Bobby Wagner took to Twitter to assure fans that the team won't be dropping off anytime soon.

Of course, too much analysis of Carroll's play-calling in the fourth quarter does a disservice to the Patriots, who scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to win. Brady wasn't perfect on Sunday night, but he made the necessary throws late in the game to spur New England's comeback.

ESPN Stats & Info posted his stat line from the fourth quarter:

The Associated Press provided some footage from Brady's and Belichick's postgame press conferences.

In the end, Brady earned the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award, per Bleacher Report:

While most were talking about "Touchdown Tom"—and rightfully so—the biggest star of the night was Butler, an undrafted rookie out of the University of West Alabama. Like Mike Jones from Super Bowl XXXIV, the 24-year-old will be remembered forever for his defensive heroics.

After the game, Butler had a hard time putting his emotions into words when interviewed by NBC's Michelle Tafoya.

"I just had a vision that I was going to make a big play and it came true and I'm just blessed," he said, via Rachel G. Bowers of The Boston Globe. "I can't explain it right now. I'm just ..."

Butler also spoke with NFL Media's Alex Flanagan.

"Malcolm, what a play," said Brady, per Bowers. "For a rookie to make a play like that in a Super Bowl and win us the game, it was unbelievable."

In truth, this wasn't the greatest Super Bowl in history. The first quarter was scoreless, and the second half didn't have a lot of back-and-forth struggle. The Seahawks scored twice in the third quarter, and the Patriots followed suit in the fourth.

Seattle's final drive, and Butler's great play, however, helped to elevate Super Bowl XLIX, and it was undoubtedly a great game. After last year's bloodbath, the 2015 edition set the bar for pretty high for the next contest.
