John Lucas III to Sign with Pistons: Latest Contract Details, Analysis, Reaction
In an effort to strengthen their ailing backcourt, the Detroit Pistons plan to sign point guard John Lucas III to a 10-day contract.
According to ESPN.com's Marc Stein, the Pistons are hoping that Lucas can at least temporarily eat up some of the minutes vacated by injured point guard Brandon Jennings:
"Going online now: ESPN sources say Pistons plan to sign John Lucas III to 10-day deal to help fill void created by loss of Brandon Jennings
— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) February 1, 2015"
Per Sam Amick of USA Today, Detroit will be without Jennings for the remainder of the season after he ruptured his Achilles:
Jennings was averaging over 15 points and nearly seven assists per game, so replacing him won't be easy. The expectation isn't for Lucas to put up similar numbers, but he has enjoyed some success in the NBA before.
Lucas is a 32-year-old veteran who has spent parts of six seasons in the league. He most recently played for the Utah Jazz last season, but his most successful year came in 2011-12 with the Chicago Bulls when he averaged 7.5 points per game as a reserve and part-time replacement for injured point guard Derrick Rose.
D.J. Augustin will pick up most of Jennings' minutes and be Detroit's go-to point guard moving forward, but it certainly can't hurt to have a veteran guy like Lucas just in case.
