McCourty Important to Patriots' Super Bowl Push
The offseason departures of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner put a dent in the reigning Super Bowl champions' secondary, but McCourty can make up for a lot of shortcomings in any defensive backfield. His rangy coverage ability and high football IQ are irreplaceable at free safety.
If he's out for long, the Patriots defense may be in serious trouble on the back end.
Of the numerous Pats who have dealt with injuries this season, McCourty is arguably the most indispensable besides quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski.
The 2010 first-round pick thrived as a cornerback at the beginning of his career, but he has made a seamless transition to free safety.
