John DeFilippo to Browns: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Mike ChiariJan 21, 2015

The Cleveland Browns haven't had much luck with offensive coordinators in recent years, but they are hopeful that they have finally found the answer in the form of John DeFilippo.

The Browns announced the decision to hire DeFilippo as the OC. Head coach Mike Pettine weighed in on the decision:

"

The things John brings to the table are exactly what we were looking for. He's the total package,” Pettine said. “He's very bright. He has great energy about him, great passion. Loves the game. Works extremely well with other people. You could see that when I brought him in and had a chance to meet with not just the offensive staff, but he spent time with the defensive staff. That was a big part of it, making sure we weren't bringing in just a playbook; we were bringing in a good person. That, to me, is one of the biggest reasons why he's here.

Defillipo weighed in on the new offense as well:

"

This isn't going to be my offense or ‘so and so's’ offense. This is going to be the Cleveland Browns' offense,” DeFilippo said. “Whatever that is to get our best players the football, it's going to be very flexible.

We're not going to just scrap something just because I'm here. I don't have that type of ego. If something's good that our players do well and they know, we're going to keep doing it. That's going to be my job here the next few weeks is I'm going to really study our last 16 games of this season and see what we're good at, see where it fits and see where it meshes with myself and coach Pettine seeing this offense.

"

Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com initially reported Cleveland hired the 36-year-old coach to lead its offense:

DeFilippo has served as a quarterbacks coach for both the New York Jets and Oakland Raiders. Derek Carr made a great deal of progress under him as a rookie in 2014, which NFL Network's Ian Rapoport singles out as a driving force behind the Browns' decision to hire him:

Per Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports 1, DeFilippo was wanted by many as a quarterbacks coach before Cleveland offered him the offensive coordinator position:

Dennis Manoloff of the Cleveland Plain Dealer broke down the hire in the following video:

Kyle Shanahan lasted just one season as the Browns' offensive coordinator on the heels of a report that there was a disconnect between management and the coaches. According to Tom Reed of Cleveland.com, though, general manager Ray Farmer believes that such conflict is common in the NFL.

"

That's just how it is. Sometimes the personnel guys want Player A and the coaches want Player B. The teams that are really, really good, they work through those things. Sometimes, you have to have the hard conversations. Sometimes you look guys in the eye and you argue and you yell, but you're trying to get it right. You're trying to come up with the right answers.

"

If there is truth to the rumors regarding Shanahan's departure, then it will certainly be interesting to see how DeFilippo handles that environment.

Above all else, though, quarterback development will be a huge part of DeFilippo's duties. If he can do with Johnny Manziel what he did with Carr, then the Browns have a chance to be very good in the near future.

If not, then another Browns offensive coordinator could conceivably be out the door in short order.
