Sherman Will Not Undergo Surgery

Friday, Feb. 20

The Seahawks confirmed that Sherman and Kam Chancellor will not need surgery this offseason.

Carroll Talks Potential For Surgery

Tuesday, Feb. 3

According to Liz Mathews of 710 Radio in Seattle, Pete Carroll said Richard Sherman may not need surgery after all:

This flies in the face of reports from Feb. 2, when Adam Caplan of ESPN passed along comments from Carroll, who confirmed that Sherman would need offseason surgery to repair his injured elbow.

Carroll also believed Sherman would be ready for next season, via Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.

Garafolo goes on to explain what kind of surgery Sherman can be expected to have, should he go under the knife:

Sherman Played Through Elbow Injury in Super Bowl

Sunday, Feb. 1

Richard Sherman didn't miss a snap in the Seattle Seahawks' 28-24 loss to the New England Patriots, but after the game it was revealed he played with torn ligaments in his elbow.

ESPN's John Clayton reported that Sherman may need to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair his elbow:

"

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman played Super Bowl XLIX with torn ligaments in his left elbow that may require Tommy John surgery in the off season, according to a source. ...

... The source indicated that the injury was worse than just an elbow sprain. Although the source didn't indicate the prognosis and timetable, it is likely he will go Tommy John surgery after the season.

"

Former NFL head team physician David J. Chao added:

Sherman suffered what was deemed an elbow sprain in the NFC Championship Game win over the Green Bay Packers, but he maintained in the lead-up to the Super Bowl that he would be able to play. He seems to be snake-bitten with injuries late in the season, though.

Sherman is certainly a vital part of Seattle's defense and arguably the best cornerback in the league (though that Darrelle Revis fella on the other sideline might disagree). He finished the regular season with 57 tackles, four interceptions and a fumble recovery, but he saved his best for the postseason, nabbing an interception in each of Seattle's playoff games aside from the Super Bowl.

And, of course, he also famously tipped the pass in the end zone that was intercepted and clinched Seattle's Super Bowl berth last year against the San Francisco 49ers. He has a habit of coming up huge in the biggest moments of the biggest games.

Now, however, it appears Sherman is facing a lengthy recovery as he deals with the crushing Super Bowl loss.
