Randall Cobb, Sam Shields Replace Dez Bryant, Darrelle Revis in 2015 Pro Bowl
It's likely a very tiny fraction of a consolation prize after Sunday's crushing NFC Championship Game loss, but the Green Bay Packers have added two more players to the Pro Bowl.
According to the team's official website, wide receiver Randall Cobb and cornerback Sam Shields have replaced Dez Bryant and Darrelle Revis on the roster. Bryant won't participate due to injury while Revis will be playing in the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots.
The duo will join Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson, John Kuhn, Clay Matthews and Josh Sitton, giving the Packers their most selections (seven) since the 15-1 season in 2011.
Cobb finished the 2014 regular season with career highs in targets (127), receptions (91), yards (1,287) and touchdowns (12), combining with Nelson to create one of the most dangerous wide receiver duos in the NFL.
The Pro Bowl could very well be his last game representing the Packers, as he is headed for free agency in the offseason, but he recently made clear his preference to return to the team, via NFL.com's Chris Wesseling:
"Of course (I want to be back). I think I've made that obvious. Like I've said before: This is a business. You don't know how it's going to go. What direction it's going to go in. You just have to sit around. I hope that I've put myself in the position where it'll handle itself. But only time can tell.
"
Shields, in his first season after penning a new four-year deal worth $39 million, started 14 games for the Packers, tallying two interceptions and 11 pass deflections. He added another key pick in the end zone during Sunday's NFC title game.
Again, while this news isn't likely to remove the sting from missing the Super Bowl, it's a nice recognition of the perseverance of Cobb, who missed almost all of last season with an injury, and the development of Shields, who went undrafted in 2010.
